University of Bremen takes over university sports: new era begins!
The University of Bremen is facing an important change in university sports. According to the University of Bremen From April 2024, the university will assume responsibility for the organization, implementation and further development of university sports. The Association for University Sports, which has carried out these tasks since 1986, will be dissolved.
The changes are intended to ensure that the extensive course offering of over 300 events in the summer semester remains accessible to students, employees and external parties in the future. All of the club's employees will be integrated into a newly founded Department 9 (university sports), which is headed by Heike Anders.
Legal framework and significance of university sports
University sport enjoys high priority at the University of Bremen, which is reflected in the large number of courses on offer. This development is in line with the requirements of the Bremen Higher Education Act, which was enacted on May 9, 2007 and last amended on March 28, 2023. The draft law covers state institutions in Bremen, including the University of Bremen and the Universities of the Arts, Bremen and Bremerhaven.
Within the framework of the law, the promotion of sport is defined as a state responsibility. Universities are also obliged to ensure gender equality and the promotion of women in science and research. Ensuring the freedom of science and art also plays a central role.
Commitment to top-class sport
The University of Bremen is not only traditionally involved in popular and university sports, but is also an active member of the General German University Sports Association (adh). The university's commitment also extends to supporting active students who want to take part in national and international competitions.
In summary, it can be said that the upcoming step to take over university sports by the University of Bremen does not just represent an organizational change. It also consciously promotes sport and the associated values within the university system, which are anchored in the Bremen University Act. The university thus lives up to its task of combining and promoting sport and science.
