Future of AI: Opportunities and risks for companies in the digital world

From June 3rd to 4th, 2025, a symposium entitled “From Platform Governance to Generative AI” will take place at the Bremen Cotton Exchange. The organizer of this important event is the Center for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI), which raises important questions about the relationship between technology and power. The focus is particularly on the challenges posed by generative AI such as ChatGPT in conjunction with social media platforms. The aim of the event is to bring together researchers, business experts and political decision-makers to discuss the complex issues surrounding these technologies. The University of Bremen also reports on a public event on June 3rd at 7:30 p.m. under the motto “Critical Times: Power and Politics in Tech Governance”. This is done by Dr. Amélie Heldt, Thomas Poell and Nicolas Suzor, with Professor Michal Kucera providing the introduction. Admission is free and registration is not required.

The digital sphere is increasingly being shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), which brings with it both opportunities and significant challenges. How Tech zeitgeist describes in detail, the ethical dimension of this development is becoming increasingly important. AI systems can increase bias and discrimination, which is why companies are encouraged to implement transparent and responsible AI methods. This is particularly relevant in areas where decisions can have far-reaching effects on individuals and groups.

Misinformation in the digital age

A central aspect of the debate about generative AI is the problem of misinformation. Loud IBM Companies rely on accurate information, especially for business decisions in areas such as supply chain management and product marketing. While generative AI can improve data-driven decision making, it also poses risks, including the risk of misinformation caused by incorrect AI-generated content. IBM's Matt Candy points out that these systems work predictively and are therefore susceptible to hallucinations that are not based on the training data.

The challenges when dealing with AI-generated content are diverse. Companies should take steps to reduce the risk of misinformation. This includes ensuring data quality and using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to generate more accurate content. Additionally, human oversight is essential to control the spread of AI-generated misinformation.

Conclusion: opportunities and challenges

The rapid development of AI technologies brings with it both potential and critical questions. While they can revolutionize many industries, they also require ethical, legal and social considerations. The upcoming conference in Bremen offers a valuable platform to discuss these topics and develop common solutions. Given the complex effects of AI, an interdisciplinary dialogue is essential to design it responsibly and prevent misuse.
