EU initiative: German universities receive millions for international networks!
The exchange between students and university representatives takes place in a dynamic framework within the Hanse University Alliance (HUA). On March 26, 2025, it was reported on the Leuphana University website that a two-day meeting of this alliance would take place at Leuphana in December 2024. This initiative was created during the HUA's founding ceremony and offered a platform for student representatives from various universities.
The meeting was financed and organized by the HUA. Ten representatives from the General Student Committees (ASten) within the HUA actively took part in the discussions. The topics covered in this exchange included financing issues, the internationalization of study programs and committee work. A special highlight was the conversation with the President of Leuphana, Sascha Spoun, who emphasized the essential role of the HUA for society, innovation and politics.
Positive feedback and student satisfaction
The participant Emil Jüchter expressed his satisfaction with the open discussions and the collegial atmosphere that characterized the meeting. Such initiatives not only strengthen the exchange of ideas, but also promote networking among students at different universities.
The HUA includes several members, including the Technical University of Hamburg, known for their motto “Technology for the People”. As one of the youngest technical universities in Germany, it is committed to training committed engineers with a focus on technology and sustainability. A central concern is to develop solutions to the pressing challenges of climate change.
A comprehensive network for the future of higher education
The HUA is part of a larger movement to create European university networks. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the development of such networks within the framework of the “European University Networks (EUN) – national initiative” program. Since the beginning of 2025, 13 German universities have received funding of around eight million euros from funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the next four years.
This initiative aims to expand cross-border cooperation in teaching and research as well as technology transfer. The EU has so far selected many alliances with more than 560 universities from 35 countries in several funding rounds. Through these programs, the DAAD intends to increase the visibility of universities and reduce bureaucratic hurdles.
Overall, the exchange within the HUA shows the commitment of the participating universities to promote both education and knowledge exchange at an international level and to create student-friendly structures. Such initiatives are essential for the future of European higher education and help find innovative solutions to political and social challenges.
