Innovative ideas for access to law: Hamburg's first Legal Hackathon

The first Hamburg Legal Hackathon took place from May 9th to 11th, 2025 at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg. The event was organized by the Center for Legal Technology and Data Science in collaboration with built e.V. and recode.law. The aim of the hackathon was to develop digital solutions that overcome barriers to access to justice.

A total of eight interdisciplinary teams took part in the 48-hour event and worked intensively on prototypes that were intended to improve access to legal information and procedures. The central challenge was “Access to Justice”. The event offered participants a platform for idea development, teamwork and keynote speeches from experts.

The creative solutions

The jury was made up of renowned members, including Prof. Dr. Christoph Kumpan, Nicole Vogelsberger and Dr. Rainer Derks. At the end of the event the winning teams were announced:

The winning teams received non-cash prizes worth a total of €4,000, which were sponsored by ARAG. The multitude of innovative project ideas highlighted the potential for a more digital and fairer future in the legal sector.

The importance of the event

The hackathon program included not only the development of the prototypes, but also lectures by experts on topics such as legal innovation and artificial intelligence in a legal context. Mentors were available to support the teams and provide them with valuable insights into legal design thinking and digital justice.

The organizers and participants were enthusiastic about the creativity and problem-solving skills that emerged during the event. It became clear that such events can promote interdisciplinary collaboration and promote innovative solutions in the legal field. At the end of the event there was a special thank you to ARAG and everyone involved for their support.

Overall, the hackathon not only presented innovative solutions, but also raised awareness of the relevance of technology and digitalization in law. The results of the event invite us to continue pursuing the development of digital technologies to improve access to justice.
