Artistic Intelligence: Revolutionary Ideas for the Art of Tomorrow!

On Friday, May 9, 2025, HafenCity University Hamburg will celebrate the kick-off event of the graduate school ARTILACS (Artistic Intelligence in Latent Creative Spaces) at 6 p.m. This innovative project, which is funded by the Authority for Science, Research and Equality of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, deals with the complex relationship between artificial intelligence (AI), art and creative research. In collaboration with partner universities such as the University of Music and Theater (HfMT) Hamburg, the University of Applied Sciences (HAW), the University of Fine Arts (HFBK) and the University of Lübeck, ARTILACS will create a platform for interdisciplinary discourses that explore the concept of “artistic intelligence”.

This kick-off event, which will take place in the HfMT multifunctional studio at Harvestehuder Weg 12 in Hamburg, promises an exciting program. Project manager Georg Hajdu will welcome the guests at 6:00 p.m. Benjamin Sprick and Benjamin Helmer then present the project, followed by presentations from various scientists. Simone C Niquille from HFBK will explain her work on “Parametric Truth: Synthetic training data and the slippery slope of ground truth” at 6:30 p.m., before Lara Stöhlmacher from HCU talks about “Encoding Situated Knowledge” at 6:45 p.m. Francisco Uberto from the HfMT will give deeper insights into multimedia composition with his presentation and performance at 7:00 p.m. The evening ends with a meet & greet with DJ Slim Schlüdy (Jan Schlüter).

Focus on artificial intelligence and art

The ARTILACS graduate school aims to promote both critical and affirmative approaches to artificial intelligence in art. The hybrid combination of AI-supported, latent spaces and traditional knowledge spaces is primarily examined. Participants can explore new opportunities for creativity and insight. The first seminars are based on current research literature on the role of AI in the arts and highlight different artistic practices.

Students who would like to take part in the college must register by April 7, 2025. Mandatory requirements for the awarding of credit points include a willingness to read, a text presentation and a written term paper or reflection on one's own artistic work. It is also possible to take part in the seminars sporadically without credit points or as a guest auditor by arrangement.

The connection between artificial intelligence and art

Artificial intelligence refers to machines that take on tasks that traditionally require human thinking. Their integration into art opens up new possibilities, but at the same time it also brings with it challenges, such as ethical concerns regarding authorship and originality. Artists are using AI technologies to create works that would not be possible without this technology, redefining the idea of creativity and artistic creation. Projects like “The Next Rembrandt” and AI-generated music examples illustrate the potential of these developments.

Overall, ARTILACS pursues the goal of critically questioning the relationships between art and AI and opening up new perspectives for creative forms of expression. This multifaceted debate could ultimately lead to lasting change in the art world by allowing personalization, inclusion and new artistic forms.
