Lifelong learning: New opportunities for seniors at Leuphana!

The Leuphana University of Lüneburg is opening its doors to guest students again in the winter semester of 2025/2026, thereby promoting the concept of lifelong learning. The guest student program, which according to the university is open to all citizens regardless of school or university qualifications, professional background or age, has attracted numerous participants since its introduction in 2013. Claus Göpfert, a 77-year-old retired teacher, is a representative of this positive development. He regularly attends lectures in politics, sociology and psychology and values the exchange with students.

The program aims to enable interested citizens to take part in courses from the regular curriculum for bachelor's and master's degree programs. It is not necessary that participants have any special entry requirements. Paid memberships offer access to up to four semester hours per week (SWS) for 125 euros or more than four SWS for 185 euros per semester. The accompanying program for guest students also includes campus tours and regular get-togethers in Café Klippo. Together with other participants, guest auditors can experience the academic community and get actively involved, which Claus Göpfert also appreciates.

Diverse offers and important dates

For the coming winter semester, over 100 courses will be offered in more than ten subject areas, including management, sustainability, education and culture. Registration for the guest auditor program takes place online via the university website and is possible until May 2, 2025. An important date is already on the calendar: an information event is planned for March 26, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the central building of the university.

In addition, from April 9, 2025, a guest student get-together will be offered every two weeks, which offers an excellent opportunity for exchange and networking. The courses for the winter semester 2024/2025 run from October 14, 2024 to January 31, 2025. Leuphana University, founded in 1946, currently has around 10,000 students, which reflects the diversity and dynamism of academic life in Lüneburg.

Federal education initiative for older people

With a total budget of around 25 million euros, which is expected to flow until 2028, 50 projects are to be supported that focus on further training in areas such as health, political education and financial knowledge. Prien emphasizes that education does not end with retirement and that older people are continually capable of learning.

These nationwide initiatives complement Leuphana's locally based offerings and demonstrate a growing awareness of how important education is for all age groups. Further information about the guest auditor program is available on the Leuphana University website or can be requested by telephone.
