University of Hamburg Teaching Prize: Who will choose the best in 2026?

On May 6, 2025, the newly established teaching prize was awarded for the first time at the University of Hamburg. The award aims to recognize outstanding teaching offerings and promote innovative teaching methods. This reported uni-hamburg.de. A total of 275 nominations were submitted by members of the university, but self-nominations were excluded.

The award ceremony took place in the atrium of the State and University Library as part of the “The main thing is teaching” event. The new award will be presented in three categories, each with prize money of 2,000 euros. The categories include: “Inspiring and Effective Teaching”, “Courageous and Cross-Border Teaching” and “Development and Renewal of Teaching”.

Winner of the teaching award

In the “Inspiring and Effective Teaching” category, Dr. Susanne Koch from the Mathematics Department of the MIN Faculty was honored. In the second category, “Courageous and cross-border teaching,” Anton Sefkow from the Faculty of Law, Lukas Musumeci from the Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning (HUL) and Marten Borchers from the MIN Faculty were honored. Prof. Dr. Parisa Moll-Khosrawi from the University Hospital Hamburg Eppendorf received the prize in the “Development and Renewal of Teaching” category.

The winners were chosen by a selection jury consisting of the Vice President for Studies and Teaching as well as five students, two teachers and one person from HUL. This transparent selection aims to make the valuable contribution of individual teachers at the University of Hamburg visible.

Collaboration and future prospects

With the introduction of the teaching award, the University of Hamburg is expanding its commitment to quality in teaching. This prize complements the Hamburg Teaching Prize of the Science Authority, which awards a total of 140,000 euros for 14 individual prizes of 10,000 euros each. In 2024, 13 teachers at the university have already been recognized for their excellent seminars, modules or exercises, which underlines the constant appreciation of qualified teaching at the university.

The University of Hamburg plans to award the teaching prize annually. The next opportunity to nominate is until March 16, 2025, as on bwl.uni-hamburg.de mentioned. This continues the commitment to innovative teaching formats and continuously improves the quality of teaching.
