MSH revolutionizes literature research with a new library system!
On July 24, 2025, the Medical School Hamburg (MSH) introduced a new cloud-based library system called “Bibliokat”. This innovative system aims to simplify literature research for students. Bibliokat offers direct access to licensed electronic media as well as freely accessible works from the university network, which includes the MSH, the BSP Business & Law School, the HMU Health and Medical University, the MSB Medical School Berlin and the HMU Erfurt.
Bibliokat will make several million literary sources available digitally. The new search application allows users to quickly find full texts of e-books, articles from e-journals and databases through simple queries. This makes access to a wide range of materials much easier.
Integration of physical media
As the system continues to develop, it is planned that physical media such as printed books, magazines and test procedures will also be integrated into the bibliography by autumn 2025. This integration will enable complete online research of all available media and make the use of library resources even more efficient.
The University of Media (HdM) in Stuttgart offers a comparable system. There, students have access to WebPac, an online catalog for licensed e-books and e-journals. There is also the Resource Discovery System (RDS), a meta-search portal that captures the entire physical and digital library holdings. Users can also use Google Scholar to find academic literature, where they can access digital publications. The licensing provided by HdM appears clear.
HdM university members can access the digital offerings both externally and from home. Access is via Shibboleth with the corresponding HdM account. In this context, there is also a uniform database information system (DBIS), which enables a targeted and systematic search for specialist areas.
Terms of Use for Electronic Resources
The use of paid, licensed electronic resources made available via platforms such as the Berlin State Library is subject to strict terms of use. Access to licensed material is permitted only to registered users and use is mostly limited to study, training or scientific purposes. Commercial use and passing on the materials to third parties are generally prohibited.
Special features such as the systematic downloading of data and the use of special software are also prohibited. University members should also note that all copyright notices and authors' names may not be removed or changed in order to reflect good scientific practice.
Overall, these developments underline the efforts of universities to improve access to information and literature. Both the MSH library and the HdM offers valuable support for students in order to better orientate themselves in the digital world of scientific literature.
