Night of the Libraries: Discover the HCU on April 4th!
HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) will be part of the first nationwide Night of Libraries on April 4, 2025. This newly launched event is an initiative of German Library Association e.V. and its 16 regional associations. With the motto "Know. Share. Discover." A call for interaction and exchange is created in order to highlight the diverse offerings of libraries in Germany.
In Hamburg, visitors can expect a varied program in the HCU library. From 5:00 p.m., architects and civil engineers can take part in a special library tour, which is repeated at 7:00 p.m. There is also a film screening on the program: the documentary “Paywall: The Business of Scholarship” will be shown at 6:00 p.m., followed by “Koyaanisqatsi” at 7:30 p.m. Another highlight is the library rally, which takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with all program items being free of charge.
Extended service hours
The HCU Library is extending its service hours on this special evening from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The meeting point for all activities will be in the entrance area of the library on the ground floor, which guarantees central access for participants. The Night of the Libraries should not only be a place of knowledge, but also a space of dialogue and discovery.
The goal of this nationwide initiative is to invite citizens to experience the diverse offerings and services of libraries in a new way. Schools, public, academic and church libraries from all over Germany are called upon to organize their own events and campaigns. Historically, the first Night of Libraries took place in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2005, and this year libraries from other federal states such as Schleswig-Holstein and Baden-Württemberg as well as international partners from Denmark, Belgium and South Tyrol are also taking part.
Participation and patronage
Elke Büdenbender took over the patronage of the Night of Libraries, which underlines the importance and official nature of this event. From 2025, the Night of the Libraries will take place every two years in all 16 federal states. In order to make the events accessible to the general public, libraries can post their promotions on the website www.nachtderbibliotheken.de register and publish your individual programs.
The Night of the Libraries is intended to not only draw attention to the diverse offerings, but also to demonstrate the valuable role of libraries in society. A unique opportunity to expand your knowledge and discover the library as a place of knowledge and inspiration.
