New construction of the Hamburg-Mitte medical center: groundbreaking ceremony!
On April 29, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building of the interim medical care center Hamburg-Mitte took place on the campus of the Helmut Schmidt University (HSU) in Wandsbek. Among those present was the President of the HSU, Prof. Dr. Klaus Beckmann, who also acts as the responsible barracks commander. The new building is part of a comprehensive restructuring of the property and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. However, the exact permanent location of the medical supply center is still pending. Numerous organizations are involved in the project, including the Federal Construction Department Hamburg, the Depenbrock company as well as the Bundeswehr Service Center (BwDLZ) and the Hamburg Mitte medical supply center.
The design of the three-story building envisages a modern design with a flat roof, a wooden facade and exposed concrete strips. The main entrance is placed on the eastern side of the building and is emphasized by a glazed main staircase. General medical areas are provided on the ground floor, including doctor's rooms and examination and treatment rooms. The registration is clearly positioned to ensure easy orientation for visitors.
Internal structure and sustainability
Specific dentistry areas and additional doctor's rooms will be set up on the first floor. The second floor is reserved for service and staff rooms. In addition, a photovoltaic system will be installed on the flat roof, which will enable efficient use of solar energy thanks to the optimal north-south orientation. This new building is intended as a temporary solution and will replace the old facilities of the medical supply center from 2027. The total costs for the construction amount to around 12 million euros.
The new construction of the medical supply center is part of Hamburg's broader commitment to investing in educational infrastructure. Since 2011, around 5 billion euros have been invested in school buildings, with a further 2.6 billion euros planned until 2028. The condition of school buildings has improved significantly, from an average score of 3.53 in 2013 to 2.47 in 2023.
Further investments in education
The initiative includes around 1,000 renovation and 620 new construction projects to keep around 3,000 school buildings in good condition. In the last twelve years, almost 850 million euros have been invested in vocational schools alone. These investments aim to sustainably increase the quality of education in Hamburg and support numerous projects such as the Hamburg Class House as an example of modular construction.
Particularly large construction projects in school construction include the campus projects at the Ausschläger Weg, Struenseestraße and HafenCity locations, which together cost more than 300 million euros. While over 6 billion euros are needed for university infrastructure, urgent immediate measures amounting to 62.5 million euros are already available. These comprehensive investments are intended to ensure that both schools and universities in Hamburg are positioned for the future.
A variety of resources are available for more detailed information on the current status of construction projects.
