New Chancellor for HafenCity University: Dr. Pekron takes over!
On July 1, 2025, Dr. Volker Pekron took over the office of Chancellor at the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU). He succeeds a former chancellor who resigned in September 2024. Previously, Dr. Pekron has been working as Executive Chancellor since December 16, 2024. His election was decided by the University Council and with the participation of the Authority for Science, Research and Equal Opportunities (BWFG). With the change at the top of the HCU, the interdisciplinary orientation of the university will also be further strengthened.
Dr. Pekron brings extensive experience from the higher education sector. Since 2020 he has been deputy chancellor and head of the finance department at the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH). During this time he gained valuable knowledge in administration and finance. Pekron describes his predecessor as an experienced professional in science-related and service-oriented functions, which makes him a suitable successor.
The new leadership structure
With Dr. Pekron's entry into office also began the second term of office of Prof. Dr. Jörg Müller-Lietzkow as President of the HCU. Müller-Lietzkow, who has been in office since July 1, 2019, was re-elected by the University Senate and confirmed by the University Council. He emphasizes the trust in the jointly developed vision for the HCU and emphasizes the importance of climate, digitalization and social justice in training and research.
The management team is supported by Prof. Dr. Annette Bögle and Prof. Karsten Schlesier, who hold the positions of vice presidents. The HCU, founded in 2006 as a university for architecture and planning, has a clear focus on architecture and the development of urban spaces, which is highly relevant today.
The vision of the HCU and challenges
In the coming years, the HCU will face challenges that will become more important due to its interdisciplinary orientation. The institutes are working to further advance teaching and research in the areas of urban development and sustainable mobility. Dr. Pekron expressed optimism about the transition from the Technical University to HafenCity University and the associated future prospects.
The HCU currently has 42 professors and around 2,500 students. The location at Henning-Voscherau-Platz in HafenCity is a central point for this interdisciplinary research. What is essential is clear communication between the various institutions and compliance with administrative requirements in order to continuously improve the efficiency of the administrative structures.
The administration plays a crucial role at universities in supporting and implementing development goals. Therefore, at the HCU, similar to the University of Kassel, the focus is on optimizing administrative processes in order to meet the needs of everyone involved. A participatory approach is pursued that links the departments and their expertise with the requirements of the university administration in order to design the administrative processes in a future-oriented manner.
The HCU thus positions itself as an innovative educational institution that faces the challenges of a constantly changing society. With Dr. With Pekron at the helm and a highly committed leadership team, the university is well positioned to tackle the challenges ahead.
