Virtual sounds: Experience Mozart live in the Lüneburg Museum!

On May 9, 2025, an extraordinary event entitled “(In-)Between Spaces” will take place at the Lüneburg Museum. Leuphana University students work together with musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) on an evening full of LIVE music, inspiring impulses and open dialogue. Admission to the event is free and opens the gates to an innovative VR installation.

This installation, “Future Presence: Mozart String Quintet,” will be offered May 19-21, 2025 and promises to take visitors on a fascinating journey through Mozart’s String Quintet in G Minor (KV 516). Using virtual reality technology, participants can enjoy an immersive experience developed in collaboration with sound artist Henrik Oppermann. Both events are designed and organized by the Leuphana Concert Lab.

Innovative approaches to musical experience

The evening on May 9th will not only launch the VR installation, but will also provide the opportunity to gain first impressions of this technology. The evening's participants, including Timothy Summers (violin), Hildegard Niebuhr-Candan (violin) and Moritz Weigert (cello), invite the audience to experience the special sounds and moods of the music. Following the concert, there will be a finale where visitors can share their first impressions of the VR installation.

The VR installation will be accessible centrally in the Lüneburg Museum on Monday, May 19th, exclusively for students, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20th and 21st, for anyone interested from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is free and an interactive experience is offered that not only gives visitors access to the music, but also to creatively engage with its structure and sound spaces.

Collaboration and creative visions

The immersive sound installation “Future Presence” is the result of a long collaboration between the MCO and Henrik Oppermann, who acts as artistic partner for immersive experiences. Since 2019, both partners have been working together on projects that expand the horizons of musical experiences. This journey to innovation includes multiple digital projects exploring key themes such as voice, structure, space and collaboration. The first steps of this creative connection were the starting point for a number of further developments, including the current VR experiences.

In this context, the event offers a unique opportunity to experience music from the perspective of the orchestra. Audiences are invited to participate in this immersive interactive experience that not only enriches the world of music, but also opens up new avenues of listening and imagination. The entire evening will guarantee a technically and artistically appealing experience aimed at both students and music lovers.
