Science you can touch: Knowledge on tap” inspires in Hamburg!

On May 28, 2025, an important event will take place in Hamburg: “Knowledge on tap”, organized by the University of Hamburg and the DESY research center. The aim of the event is to communicate current research results in a relaxed atmosphere, thereby promoting a dialogue between science and the public.

The unique format includes talks taking place in around 50 pubs and bars, so the topics are presented in an entertaining and accessible way. The lectures cover a wide range of topics, including dark matter, 5,000-year-old epistolary secrets, climate protection strategies, the influence of language on identity, parasite strategies, space travel, mini-accelerators, the threat of black holes, sign languages and Hamburg's future role as a tree capital.

Cultural bridge to science

“Knowledge on tap” has been around since 2015 and promotes exchange and discussion between scientists and the general public, regardless of their prior knowledge. The project is supported by the clusters of excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter” and “Quantum Universe” as well as PIER PLUS. The event is also supported by the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments.

This initiative is in line with the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In its commitment to improved science communication, the BMBF aims to empower citizens through well-founded information and to promote dialogue between science and society. According to one BMBF report Science communication has been integrated into all funding guidelines since 2022. This is happening in the context of anchoring scientific communication in the federal government's coalition agreement.

Relevant scientific findings are crucial for overcoming social challenges. The BMBF's initiatives show how important exchange with researchers is in order to create an informed public. The Wisskomm portal offers citizens and researchers a platform for information and exchange.

Building trust through dialogue

The German Research Foundation (DFG) also plays an important role in science communication. It sees it as its task to inform the public about scientific findings and to strengthen trust between science and society. The DFG supports scientists who want to transparently communicate what their research is about and how it contributes to answering social questions.

The dialogue between science and external target groups is defined as central by the DFG. Transparent communication is supported by numerous programs and initiatives. This includes events, exhibitions and online formats that aim to make science tangible and promote public discussions.

Events like “Knowledge on tap” lay the foundation for a comprehensive exchange that can have a positive impact on society’s perception of science. Participation is encouraged, and anyone who would like to find out more about the topics and upcoming lectures can visit the website www.wissenvomfass.de visit.
