Design heroine Johanna Seelemann: insights into her creative revolution!
Today, October 14, 2025, Johanna Seelemann was announced as the new project professor in the field of product design at the Kassel School of Art. The designer, born in Leipzig in 1990, brings an international perspective, shaped by her training in Germany, Iceland and the Netherlands. In 2020 she founded her own studio, which focuses on everyday objects, packaging and tools and highlights their production and circulation systems. Her work aims to open up new perspectives on the everyday by examining supply chains and material languages.
Seelemann's design approach combines product design, conceptual research and strategy while focusing on themes of replacement, adaptation and resilience. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Design Museum London, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Villa Noailles in Hyères. She received the Green Concept Award in 2022 for her innovative concepts and was nominated for the Emerging Designer of the Year Award at the Dezeen Awards in 2023. She is also highlighted as a creative leader of the future by Wallpaper* magazine.
New project professorship with an innovative focus
In her new role, Seelemann leads a project entitled “Designed by Refrigeration – Overcoming the Artificial Cryosphere.” This course addresses the far-reaching effects of artificial cold on nutrition, infrastructure and lifestyle. The students should critically examine the global cold chain and alternative strategies for dealing with food. Cooling is viewed not only as a technical phenomenon, but also as a cultural and ecological phenomenon.
Seelemann's inaugural lecture took place on October 13, 2025 at 12 p.m. in the art school's lecture hall, where she presented her vision for the new course. This innovative approach to product design promises to provide important inspiration for the future design and use of resources.
