JLU Giessen launches innovative AI platform for students and employees

The Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU) has created innovative access to generative AI tools with its new platform JLU kiChat. This initiative is aimed exclusively at members of the university, including students, lecturers and employees. The platform enables a variety of functions, from text creation to idea generation

.

According to a report from the University of Giessen, the application is designed to be simple and user-friendly. Users can access the platform via their university ID without the need for an additional account. This makes access to the offers much easier, as no user-related data is stored and external AI providers cannot trace requests back to individual users. JLU kiChat thus creates the highest level of data protection in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the applicable legal regulations.

Functionality and tools

JLU kiChat enables the use of a selection of open source models and offers support in the areas of text creation, analysis, translation and programming. The platform is browser-based and allows users to share their input and generated output with others. This flexible use is intended, in particular, to integrate experiences with artificial intelligence into daily work processes.

The AI tools offered are categorized into three security levels:

Security level Description
ki@JLU Modern language models in test mode, inputs cannot be viewed.
ki@EU Open source AI models on European cloud servers, no personal data is allowed to be entered.
OpenAI AI models on cloud servers outside Europe, inputs must not contain any personal data.

Before users use the AI tools in exams, information on the responsible use of AI is provided. Additionally, training courses are available to promote the use of generative AI.

Policies and Usage

The use of the platform is clearly regulated. The generative AI tools should only be used for academic purposes, such as studying, teaching and research. Private concerns or passing on access to third parties are not permitted. The university has also developed guidelines to ensure that all users respect the rights of third parties and do not distribute illegal content. If misuse is suspected, access can be blocked immediately.

The new offering is not only a technological advance for JLU, but also a step towards the comprehensive integration of artificial intelligence into academic contexts. Information on usage and data protection regulations is recorded on the platform and in the relevant documents.
