AI revolution in social work: Kassel University presents prototypes!

The University of Kassel, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, has launched a groundbreaking project that aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into social work. As part of the “rückenwind³” program, innovative prototypes are being developed that are intended to sustainably support the work of social institutions. Loud University of Kassel The scientific support of this project is part of the project management in digital transformation (PMDT) department, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Tim Brown. The project not only offers practical access for students, but is also intended to address relevant social issues.

Joana Gerstle, a member of the PMDT department, emphasizes the importance of the practical application of theoretical knowledge. Together with Dr. André Knie, managing director of the start-up DataHive, who coaches the technical implementation of the prototypes, developed solutions that are intended to relieve the burden on the staff of a cultural center. This includes automated research for funding opportunities and structured documentation of work processes. An outstanding result of this approach is an interactive reception terminal that provides AI-powered information in multiple languages, especially for refugees who need information about language courses and contact points.

Funding and target group

The project is funded by both the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus). The objective is to develop and integrate AI-based prototypes into the work processes of social institutions, which makes an important contribution to securing skilled workers in social professional fields, as in the program tailwind³ is executed.

This program focuses on the challenges of demographic and digital change. It aims to adapt structures and cultures in non-profit social economy organizations. As part of the program, new, flexible and target group-specific offers for skills adaptation can be established for employees.

Current developments and outlook

The public presentation of the project results will take place on July 16, 2025 in the Schlachthof Cultural Center. Representatives from both institutions will provide input on the role of AI in social work. Mirko Zapp, managing director of the cultural center, describes the enormous potential of the developments, especially for social work, and emphasizes the importance of promoting innovative approaches.

In summary, the project at the University of Kassel and its results not only open a new chapter in social work, but could also open up new ways to improve working conditions and equal opportunities for employees in this area. The integration of AI into social work shows how technological developments can be used specifically to meet the challenges of the future.
