Artificial intelligence in focus: Ethics and future at the AI Summercamp 2025!

The discussion about generative artificial intelligence (AI) has become more intense in recent years, not only in technological but also in ethical aspects. An important point on this agenda is the upcoming “AI Summercamp 2025: Techniques and Ethics of Generative AI”, which will take place from September 8th to 26th, 2025 at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU). This is an excellent opportunity to discuss the technical possibilities and social challenges associated with generative AI.

JLU has been intensively involved in the topic of AI for many years through research, teaching and administration. This commitment is reflected in the organization of the summer camp, which is supported by several university institutions in collaboration with Macquarie University. The event will include public lectures and discussion panels that will deal with the complex aspects of AI.

Public lectures and discussion groups

The event will begin with an opening lecture by Christian Uhle on September 8, 2025 at 6 p.m. Under the title “Artificial Intelligence and Real Life: Philosophical Orientation for a Good Future,” Uhle will provide important impulses for the ethical use of AI. Another highlight is the panel discussion with Dr. Brian Ballsun-Stanton from Macquarie University, who also studies the ethical implications of the technology.

A second lecture will take place on September 16, 2025 at 5 p.m., given by Dr. Sophie Garling and Yvonne Roßmann are held by JUN Legal GmbH. You will cover the topic “Generative AI: Plagiarism at the push of a button? – Between copyright and innovation”. These lectures will take place in the Margarete-Bieber-Saal at Ludwigstraße 34 in Gießen and are accessible free of charge, although online registration is recommended.

Ethical issues of generative AI

However, the discussion about generative AI is not limited to technical aspects. There are ethical issues associated with the use of these technologies that cannot be ignored. There are several risks associated with it, such as misinformation, plagiarism, and copyright infringement. This was also highlighted by BCG's Tad Roselund, who calls for a comprehensive approach with clear strategies and responsible use of AI.

Additionally, an analysis of ethical concerns when using generative AI highlights eight key aspects that companies should consider:

aspect
1. Spreading harmful content
2. Copyright and Legal Risks
3. Data breaches
4. Publication of sensitive information
5. Reinforcing existing prejudices
6. Role of employees
7. Origin of data
8. Lack of explainability and interpretability

These challenges require not only careful consideration when developing AI technologies, but also the establishment of clear policies and governance structures within companies. The lectures as part of the AI Summer Camp provide a platform to discuss these important topics and develop solutions.
