Art at the center: Present creative theses from JLU in Giessen!

The upcoming exhibition “What Does Art Do?” at the Kultur im Zentrum (KiZ) in Giessen promises an exciting mix of contemporary artistic expressions. The event will take place from April 30th to June 1st, 2025 and is a presentation of the final theses of the Institute for Art Education at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU). A total of 18 talented artists will show their works, immersing visitors in various media.

The exhibition will feature interactive installations, paintings, ceramic sculptures, photographic spatial installations, artistic research and digital media. The topics and techniques dealt with in the works are both diverse and individual, which contributes to an exciting examination of social and personal issues. The works address material aesthetics and invite you to think about their meaning in today's society.

Variety of topics for the theses

The range of topics on display ranges from personal and social issues to aesthetic reflections. Gina Sophie Backhoff deals with the topic of female identity and social expectations of women in her work “BAGGAGE”. Miriam Braun, on the other hand, reinterprets the Sisyphus myth in her installation “SASSYPHOS”. Helena Steffes also addresses invisible boundaries in club rooms in her work “TÜRPOLITIK” and asks about belonging and exclusion.

Other notable contributions include Annika Ines Koch's “HOLDING ON,” which embodies physical memories through textile sculptures, and Franziska Pausch's “FUNGUS ARTIS,” which focuses on mushrooms between reality and fantasy. Josefine Kohl interprets hybrid creatures in her work “SPECIES”, while Isabell Becker deals with the aesthetic effects of metalworking in “STAHL”. In “CERAMICS IN MOTION,” Catharina Rother brings moving ceramic objects into the room and Anna Chiara Michalski addresses childhood memories of Warsaw in “LEAVING HOME.”

Vernissage and opening times

The opening of the exhibition will take place on April 30, 2025 at 6 p.m., with speeches from curators Stefan Neubacher, Ina Weise and Martin Schepers expected. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and entry is free. This accessibility is intended to appeal to as many art lovers as possible and encourage discussion about the diverse forms of expression in art.

The graduates who make the exhibition possible are a testament to current developments in the art sector and reflect the main topics that also characterize the bachelor's theses in art education in Giessen. These papers represent an examination of relevant theoretical questions in the course of study and ensure that students acquire in-depth knowledge in thirteen weeks of intensive work. The choice of topic is individual and has the aim of gaining knowledge in theory, empiricism and methodology. The coming developments in the art and media landscape find their expression here.

Overall, the upcoming exhibition “What Does Art Do?” both a showcase for emerging talent and a reflection of current social discourses illuminated through creative media and expression.
