MINT day in Kassel: experiments and surprises for little explorers!

On June 3, 2025, the MINT hub at the University of Kassel will be organizing the “MINT do Saturday” action day for the third time. The aim of this event is to awaken enthusiasm for scientific and technical topics and to make the practical relevance of the MINT subjects tangible. The event is supported by a network of regional partners, including schools, companies and extracurricular learning locations. The initiative is in line with comprehensive efforts to improve and promote STEM education in Germany.

The program for this day of action is varied and interactive. Visitors have the opportunity to experience exciting activities such as testing chocolate bending beams in the Civil Engineering Department. In mechanical engineering, water rockets can be launched, while in the field of electrical engineering/computer science, experiments on power electronics and energy technology are carried out. In addition, participants can make their own electrical circuits. External partners organize the day with various offers, including:

  • Schülerforschungszentrum Nordhessen: MINT-Van.
  • Future Space: 3D-Druck-Angebot.
  • Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule: Mathe-Spiele.
  • Max-Eyth-Schule: Lötübungen.
  • „Jugend forscht“: Projekte und Experimente.
  • Hacker School: Erste Programmierkenntnisse.
  • Schmidtsche Schack: Virtuelles Schweißen am Schweiß-Simulator.
  • Kasseler Verkehrs- und Versorgungs-GmbH: Virtuelle Fahrten im Simulator.

Support from regional partners

The support for MINT do Saturdays is diverse. Partners from industry, such as Volkswagen, the employers' association HESSENMETALL Nordhessen, Micromata GmbH and SCHMIDTSCHE SCHACK | ARVOS GmbH contribute to the success of this day. The MINT Hub itself is part of a larger concept that aims to support schools by strengthening educational partnerships. Targeted training, exchange of experiences and financing options are developed in order to intensify the connection to the world of work.

The Knowledge factory describes the hub concept as an extension of the classic educational partnership, which enables actors to implement needs-based educational projects across the region. While project ideas come from the knowledge factory, quality assurance is guaranteed on site by state educational institutes, so that the offers for educational institutions remain free of charge.

Social significance of STEM education

The need for concrete educational concepts to shape digitalization is becoming increasingly obvious. A broad social consensus on the importance of MINT education is seen as essential for individual life and career opportunities as well as for social participation and economic development. Germany is therefore intensifying its commitment to high-quality and integrative MINT education.

Numerous social actors are committed to these goals in a national MINT forum. The need for action includes specialist and teacher training, increasing the proportion of women in MINT professions and measures for the quality and effectiveness of MINT projects. These topics are particularly relevant in order to optimally prepare future generations for the challenges of an increasingly digitalized working world.
