New certificate to JLU: European Track for a peaceful future!
Europe faces major challenges in the coming years, ranging from geopolitical tensions and wars to pandemics and climate change. Against this background, the Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU) is offering a new certificate from the winter semester 2025/2026: the European track (EUT). This innovative program aims to prepare students to actively shape a democratic, just and peaceful Europe.
Participating JLU students have the opportunity to credit both face-to-face and online courses from partner universities within the framework of EUPeace. A central concept of the European Track is the promotion of international experiences and interculturality. This means that (virtual) mobility is required as a prerequisite for successful completion of the program. Prof. Dr. Alexander Goesmann expressly encourages students to spend a whole semester or even a year at one of the EUPeace partner universities.
Course offerings and structure
Financial support comes from the Erasmus+ program, with over 1.9 million euros in scholarship funds available for the next two years. The European Track courses are divided into seven different subject areas:
Subject area
---
1. Intercultural communication
2. War and Peace
3. Democracy, equality, justice
4. Building inclusive societies
5. Public health and bioethics
6. Technologies of tomorrow
7. Sustainability in action
The EUT certificate can be acquired in three levels, with the first level being completed entirely through virtual mobility. For the higher levels, face-to-face courses at a foreign EUPeace partner university are required. In addition, starting courses from the Virtual European Exchange Program (VEEP) are offered.
Interdisciplinarity and flexibility
The European Track program is open to all students of EUPeace universities and will be introduced in a pilot phase for the 2025/26 academic year. In the coming months, the concept, content and offers will be continuously developed. Interdisciplinarity plays a central role here. Courses are offered in various alliance languages, including English, and cover social sciences as well as arts, humanities, sciences and various engineering disciplines.
Students have the freedom to choose within the European Track catalog and pursue their professional interests, be it in familiar subject areas or new challenges. The flexibility is intended to prepare future specialists for collaboration in different disciplines and professions. More information about the EUPeace initiative and its offerings can be found on the website EUPeace to find.
Overall, this development contributes to strengthening the European educational landscape and supports the efforts for peace and justice required by the increasing global challenges. Future students are invited to become part of this transnational cooperation and make an active contribution to a peaceful Europe.
