Religious Neighborhoods: Photography Workshop in Frankfurt!
On May 28, 2025, an innovative workshop at the Frankfurt Adult Education Center will bring the city's religious diversity into the center. The workshop entitled “Discovering Religious Neighborhoods Photographically” will take place on June 28th and 29th and August 23rd and 24th, 2025. Those interested can register both on site at Sonnemannstrasse 13 in Frankfurt and online. The workshop is aimed at photography enthusiasts with various experience levels, from beginners to experienced photographers.
The practical part of the workshop is led by the photojournalist Julius Matuschik. As part of the program, religious-sensitive approaches to documentary photography are taught. Scientific input from experts from the “Religious Dynamics” research network is also planned. The contributors include renowned specialists such as Susanne Fehlings (ethnology), Albrecht Fuess (Islamic studies) and Karoline Müller (history).
Religious diversity in Frankfurt
Frankfurt is not only known for its economic importance, but also for its impressive religious diversity. The Council of Religions includes nine major groups, such as Christian churches and the Baha'i faith. Visible traces of these religious communities can be found across the city, be it through buildings, flyers or clothing with religious connotations. These aspects will be examined in detail in the workshop in order to clarify the question of what actually defines religious neighborhoods.
Participants have the opportunity to develop individual photo projects that are professionally supervised. These projects can be shown in a small exhibition, which offers an excellent opportunity to present your own perspective and creative approach to the topic. Reflection on visual markers and their influence on the perception of religious groups plays a central role.
Practical information and registration
Participation in the workshop is free, but registration through the Frankfurt Adult Education Center is required. The organizers include the Frankfurt Adult Education Center, the Goethe University as well as the “Interface of Religion” and the research network “Dynamics of the Religious”. The project is supported by cooperation partners such as the Academy for Islam in Science and Society (AIWG) and the Frobenius Institute.
Travel costs can probably be covered for participants from outside of Germany, which makes access to the workshop easier. The workshop takes place both in person and in the form of online sessions, although Zoom meetings are also planned after consultation.
Interested photography fans should take the opportunity to take part in this unique project, which not only promotes artistic skills, but also provides a deep insight into Frankfurt's religious context. Further information can be found in the event details available on the website University of Frankfurt and Frankfurt University of Education be provided.
The workshop not only offers the opportunity to learn and deepen photographic skills, but also the opportunity to actively engage with the cultural and religious diversity of Frankfurt. This initiative could be a significant step towards promoting interreligious dialogue and strengthening a sense of community in this colorful city.
