Revolution in mechanics: AI modeling for new materials!

On September 1, 2025, Dr. Yousef Heider took over the professorship for artificial intelligence in mechanics at the University of Kassel. This important position allows him to bring his extensive expertise in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning to teaching and research. Heider previously worked as a senior engineer at the Institute for Structural Mechanics and Numerical Mechanics at Leibniz University Hannover since October 2023. With an impressive career, which includes a habilitation in mechanics in 2021, Heider brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

His focus at the University of Kassel includes data-driven and machine learning-supported modeling in material and structural mechanics, inverse material design processes and physics-informed machine learning. These areas are particularly relevant at a time when innovative approaches to materials science are in high demand.

Latest developments in material mechanics

MPIE reported.

The neural network learns from pre-computed data and is able to efficiently predict unknown simulation configurations. A key advantage is that the new solver does not require an iterative solution method, which significantly reduces the computing time.

Innovations in inverse design of materials

In addition, deep learning is increasingly being used for the inverse design of metamaterials. The aim of this research is to develop material structures that meet specific functional requirements, such as multifunctional, porous materials. The 3D variational autoencoder (VAE) enables more precise and adaptable development of new microstructures compared to conventional methods. These approaches are closely linked to current innovations in 3D printing, which is driving the development of novel, multifunctional materials.

Several scientists are involved in these projects, including Elsayed Saber Elsayed, M. Sc., Jannik Christian Jarms, M. Sc., Phu Thien Nguyen, M. Sc., and Alexandros Tragoudas, M. Sc., as Wissenhochn.de turns out.

By combining artificial intelligence with innovative techniques in material mechanics and design, Dr. Yousef Heider has the potential to make significant progress across the industry. His work at the University of Kassel will certainly have a lasting impact on future research and teaching in this dynamic area.
