SIMS Europe 2025: Gießen becomes the center of materials research!

SIMS Europe 2025 will take place from September 7th to 9th, 2025 at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. This conference is the second largest of its kind in the world and is held every two years. Since its founding in 1998, the event has steadily grown in importance and is an important meeting point for experts in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), a key technology in materials research for analyzing the chemical composition of materials. The University of Giessen emphasizes that the high spatial resolutions of the SIMS method were recognized by the organizers, including Prof. Dr. Michael Dürr and Prof. Dr. Marcus Rohnke, should be emphasized.

The conference is led by an experienced organizational team, including Prof. Dr. Anja Henß from JLU and Prof. Manuela Killian from the University of Siegen. Over 200 participants from various countries, including Japan and the USA, are expected, underlining the international nature of the event. Particular attention is paid to promoting young scientists by offering a further training course on SIMS technology on the first day.

Participation and program

Conference registration is required for all speakers and poster presenters; On-site registration is not recommended. There are reduced fees, especially for students, although appropriate proof is required. Participants can look forward to a welcoming atmosphere that begins on Sunday evening with a reception in the chemistry building, including free food, drinks and live music.

For the conference, catering costs are included in the participation fee, with various buffet options available, including vegetarian and vegan options. In addition, special dietary preferences are communicated in advance. A highlight is the special SIMS school on Sunday, where lunch is provided for registered participants.

Lectures and poster presentations

As part of the program there will also be a dynamic SIMS session on September 7th at 4 p.m. with lectures by Jan Leitner and Carina Gill, which is open to all participants free of charge. The oral presentations are technically supported: your own laptops can be used, with HDMI and USB-C connection options. Windows PCs with PowerPoint 365 are also available.

The timing for the presentations is clearly regulated. Normal papers last 12 minutes plus 3 minutes of discussion, keynote talks last 25 minutes with 5 minutes of discussion, and plenary talks last 40 minutes plus 10 minutes of discussion. The poster presentations are to be made in DIN A0 in portrait format and participants can present their posters on Monday at 5 p.m. The best posters will be awarded at the closing ceremony.

The organizers of SIMS Europe 2025 have set themselves the goal of promoting the visibility of materials research and Giessen as a research location and of offering a platform to young researchers in particular. The focus on an international and innovative discussion in the SIMS community is a crucial part of the conference. More information is available on the official website SIMS Europe to find.
