Study start in 2025: Record number of international students in Kassel!
A positive conclusion has been drawn at the start of the 2025/26 winter semester at the University of Kassel. The university opens on Monday, October 13th, with a provisional enrollment of 21,095 students. This is a decrease compared to the previous year, in which 21,352 students were enrolled. Nevertheless, there is a pleasing increase in first-semester students: 4,713 new enrollments represent an increase compared to last year's 4,652 first-semester students. This marks the third consecutive increase, as uni-kassel.de reported.
The new degree programs now available with a focus on sustainability and the bachelor's degree in business informatics are also becoming more important. 270 students have already registered for the new offerings. Prof. Dr. Ute Clement, President of the University of Kassel, is optimistic about the development and confirms the plans to modernize the course offerings. Enrollment numbers will be updated by the end of November, which does not rule out a further increase.
International students and trends
Another positive trend can be seen among international students. With 3,345 enrolled foreign students, an increase of 241 compared to the previous year, the University of Kassel achieved a record share of 16 percent. This includes 2,590 foreign students, a record number, reported by presseportal.de. The most common countries of origin are India and Pakistan, which underlines the international appeal of the university.
However, the Conference of Culture Ministers has also expressed growing concern about declining student numbers in Germany and Hesse by 2027. This trend could significantly influence future university operations.
Student numbers in context
In 2024, around 480,000 students received BAföG, with an average monthly funding amount of 657 euros. For many, the need for additional income through part-time jobs is a reality, as scholarships and parental support are often not enough. These circumstances reflect the general student situation in Germany, where the pressure to become financially independent is growing.
With these developments, the increased number of international students and the establishment of new study programs, the University of Kassel is pursuing a proactive strategy to remain attractive for future students even in challenging times.
