JLU students discover Montpellier: double degree in sight!
The Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU) offers an innovative way to promote international careers with its master's degree program “Intercultural Communication and Business” (ICB). Under the leadership of Prof. Kirsten von Hagen, JLU students recently visited Montpellier to take part in a city tour organized by architect Martin Andersch. This excursion illustrates the close connection between theory and practice that is promoted as part of the course.
The ICB master's degree program prepares students to operate successfully in the complex and globalized world of work. Particularly noteworthy is the opportunity for students who choose French as their main subject to acquire both a German Master of Arts and the French “Master mention Langues étrangères appliquées, parcours Négociation de Projets Internationaux” as part of a double degree program. This partnership with the Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 (UPVM3) was assessed positively by a German-French expert commission and underlines the quality of the training offered. JLU reports that the program will be funded by the Franco-German University (DFH) from the winter semester of 2025/26.
Study content and course offerings
The Master’s program combines numerous disciplines. It includes linguistics and cultural studies subjects as well as economics modules. The course also includes compulsory internships and the writing of a master's thesis. The playful design of the language courses offers students the opportunity to deepen their main subject in a foreign language as well as learn a second business language. The majors available are:
- Anglophone Studies

- Lusitanian Studies/Portuguese
- Russian/Russian
Additionally, students can choose from a variety of business languages, including:

A minor in business administration and two modules in business law round off the academic training. DAAD emphasizes that the course prepares students for the intercultural requirements of the global market.
Career opportunities and applications
Feedback from graduates of the program has shown that graduates are in high demand in the job market. The combination of languages, culture and economics ensures that graduates are well prepared for the challenges of professional life. Applications for the double degree program are open until May 15, 2025, although two separate applications are required.
The students who take part in this program receive mobility grants and a seal of quality recognized throughout Europe. This award is another plus point that underlines the value of the course.
