Diversity at universities: Opportunities for the future of education!
On March 13, 2025, the conference “Diversity as a challenge and development opportunity for the university of the future” took place at Philipps University in Marburg. Around 150 participants from the areas of teaching, consulting, educational management and students came together to discuss the importance of diversity in higher education. The event not only offered a space for the exchange of ideas, but also for the development of concrete support measures that are intended to support the integration and success of a diverse student body. Loud uni-marburg.de emphasizes Prof. Dr. Yvonne Zimmermann, Vice President for Education, says that diversity makes universities more innovative and future-proof.
The conclusion of the conference was clear: universities can benefit significantly from diverse perspectives by further developing the teaching and learning culture. There is a great need to create appropriate structures and support services to effectively promote this diversity. This is also the goal of the UMRdivers project, which has been active since 2022 and will be funded until 2025. The project aims to optimize study conditions for a diverse student body by implementing various measures ranging from schooling to successful completion of studies.
Diverse perspectives in higher education
A central element of the conference was the discussion about the different dimensions of diversity that shape higher education. This includes socio-economic, socio-cultural and physical aspects that can influence the educational path of students. Workshops covered topics such as equal opportunities, making teacher training courses more flexible, dealing with stereotypes as well as modern teaching methods and language use. These aspects are crucial to ensure an inclusive and excellent university education, as well as the Journal for university development ZFHE highlighted in one of its editions.
The feedback shows that diversity management (DIM) is playing an increasingly important role at universities. This management aims to meet the needs of different groups, including students with children, migrant backgrounds or disabilities. Initiatives such as the DAAD's diversity agenda reinforce how important diversity is for the quality of studying, teaching and research. With its “Diversity at German Universities” initiative, the University Rectors’ Conference (HRK) is committed to supporting universities in the development of their diversity concepts.
Strengthened collaboration and research
The University of Magdeburg recorded the status quo on diversity, equality and inclusion between 2021 and 2023, based on a comprehensive analysis of 76 universities. The HIS Institute for University Development also continuously carries out studies on the implementation of inclusion and diversity. These valuable insights help to identify specific needs of students and develop appropriate measures.
The “Diversity in Education Research – DivER” working group at the University of Hamburg provides significant impetus for this by promoting research on diversity in education. The Diversity Audit actively supports universities in developing and implementing structures and measures for the inclusion of diverse groups of people. A particular focus is on the internationalization of teacher training in order to intensify the exchange between universities and politics.
