World Art Day: Gigantic mural unveiled in Giessen's new library!
On April 15, 2025, World Art Day, a special unveiling will take place in the new Natural and Life Sciences branch library of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU): an approximately four meter high mural entitled “Interfaces”. This artistic representation showcases various elements from the natural and life sciences.
In addition to this mural, an impressive mobile by the Wuppertal artist Fernand Kloster will be presented, which will be designed by Prof. Dr. Volker Wissemann, a professor at JLU, was donated. The mobile, which has a diameter of around 3.50 meters, shows stylized creatures revolving around a golden book and addresses the evolution of species - from single-celled organisms to large animals such as a sperm whale and an elephant.
Opening of the library and works of art
The library will open its doors on April 16, 2025. Both works of art will then be open to the public and will also be visible from the outside. The official opening ceremony of the library itself is scheduled for April 25, 2025. The library will be a valuable resource for students and offers around 40,000 books on topics such as medicine, veterinary medicine, chemistry, physics and biology. In addition, various rooms, such as lounge areas and work rooms, are provided for student use.
The mural “Interfaces” is designed as a cut-out and was transferred to the wall by JLU art education students. In this way, art not only makes an aesthetic contribution, but also an educational connection to science.
Artistic support and scientific development
This project was funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Research, Art and Culture (HMWK), which underlines the relevance of art in educational institutions. The connection between art and science has a long tradition and is presented here as a way to promote interdisciplinary approaches and integrate creative thinking in the academic world.
Since its founding, the Justus Liebig University of Giessen has established itself as an educational institution that offers a wide range of study programs. These range from the natural sciences to the humanities.
