Greifswald sets an example: New anti-Semitism commissioner appointed!
The University of Greifswald has taken an important step to combat anti-Semitism by appointing Prof. Dr. Stefan Beyerle from the Faculty of Theology was appointed anti-Semitism commissioner. This appointment should be seen as a clear sign of an open and democratic culture at the university. Rector Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel emphasizes the importance of this decision in view of the growing anti-Semitic resentment in society. Beyerle himself is the holder of the professorship “Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism” and managing director of the Gustaf Dalman Institute.
With his new role, Beyerle will be a point of contact and advice for both Jewish and non-Jewish university members. He is also the contact person for anti-Semitic incidents at the University of Greifswald. Martin Rösel has also been named as a contact person to promote information about and how to deal with such incidents. This initiative is part of an effort to address anti-Semitism as a serious problem in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the Jewish population represents a small but significant minority.
A clear mission
Prof. Dr. Beyerle will advise the university's rectorate and plans to offer information events and academic seminars. A central goal of these measures is to sensitize society to the narratives of anti-Semitism in the past and present. Networking with Jewish communities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is particularly important to Beyerle, especially with the state rabbi Yuriy Kadnykov. The collaboration aims to intensify the discussion and documentation of anti-Semitism and to design prevention campaigns.
A complementary program supported by Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier is “Meet a Jew”. This program promotes the exchange of young people with fellow Jews. It offers students the opportunity to have conversations with young Jews in order to gain a deeper understanding and an unprejudiced view of Jewish life.
Important collaboration
In the context of his tasks, Beyerle will hold regular discussions with the Jewish regional association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Jewish communities in Schwerin and Rostock. These dialogues will discuss important issues affecting the Jewish communities in the region and lay the foundation for future collaborations.
Beyerle's appointment is seen as a decisive step to make Jewish life in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania visible and to promote respectful exchange. With this measure, the university emphasizes that addressing anti-Semitism is an integral part of a lively and inclusive university that faces the challenges of modern society.
