Indian delegation strengthens cooperation with University of Rostock!

On August 20, 2025, a delegation from India's Goa University visited the University of Rostock to expand existing contacts and initiate new collaborations. Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Harilal Bhaskara Menon's visit took place as part of a multi-day program that took place from August 18th to 20th at the Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW). The visit followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Goa in February 2025, which envisages greater collaboration in climate and coastal research uni-rostock.de reported.

The Indian delegation was officially welcomed by Science and Culture Minister Bettina Martin and IOW Director Prof. Dr. Oliver Zielinski. During the visit, intensive discussions were held with scientists from the IOW and the University of Rostock. The aim of these discussions was to develop joint research projects on topics related to climate change and its consequences, such as extreme weather events and the impact of human activities on coastal ecosystems.

Goals of the cooperation

The cooperation between the University of Rostock and Goa University pursues the overarching goal of deepening international cooperation in climate research. This includes the development of new technologies and autonomous systems as well as the funding of guest stays for researchers, teachers and students. In addition, the exchange of research results and materials should be intensified. In this context, Minister Bettina Martin emphasized the need for international cooperation to overcome the challenges of climate change.

Another aspect of the cooperation is the high number of Indian students and doctoral candidates at the University of Rostock. By initiating new exchange programs, German students will have more opportunities to gain international experience and learn from local conditions in India.

International university cooperation

In 2023, Germany recorded a total of 18,153 international collaborations between 312 universities that were announced without the Erasmus program. The internationalization of universities is seen as a central strategy to secure and expand the competitiveness of the German university location bmftr.bund.de explained. The federal and state governments have already adopted a comprehensive strategy to promote international university cooperation in the summer of 2024.

The strategy has different goals, including expanding the attractiveness of the German university location for international students and researchers. A particular focus is on supporting physical and virtual mobility as well as improving the integration of international students. There is great interest in establishing various programs to increase mobility in order to further promote exchange between German and international universities.

In summary, it can be said that the Goa University delegation trip to Rostock is on a solid basis for future cooperation. Intensive discussions and joint research approaches make a valuable contribution to global scientific exchange.
