Celebrate innovations: Rostock University shows 40 years of patent history!
On October 8, 2025, the Rostock University Library and the Patent and Standards Center (PNZ) will open a new poster exhibition in the Südstadt campus library. This presents exciting inventions and innovations and simultaneously marks the start of the semester and the 40th anniversary of the PNZ. Under the leadership of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Utilization Association (VVB-MV) and the University of Rostock Service GmbH, the posters, which were presented at the “innnotreff MV” tech exchange in June 2023, will be exhibited in the library.
The exhibition covers numerous topics that are important for the further development of modern technologies. These include realistic testing systems, 3D printing applications, high-precision movement control, an intelligent stable floor system and laser scanning in ophthalmology. The exhibition also gives visitors an insight into the 40-year history of the PNZ, which was founded in 1985 as the Polytechnic Patent Library and now functions as a modern service center. Anyone interested can visit the poster exhibition during library opening hours.
Patent and standards information
The PNZ Rostock is the only standards information point in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The current DIN standards and technical guidelines can be viewed here free of charge. The PNZ plays a central role in protecting intellectual property in the region.
The German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) offers users the opportunity to search for patents, utility models, trademarks and designs online and free of charge. A revised IPC application from the DPMA is now available, which contains flexible search fields and an improved hit list, as well as the ability to visualize hierarchical structures. These applications are used in particular for novelty research, to assess patent awards and to track competitive activities.
Promoting innovation
Innovations are an essential success factor for the German economy. The innovation policy of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) focuses on promoting innovations and their rapid dissemination. The WIPANO program particularly supports the transfer of knowledge and technology through patents and standards.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are supported to use intellectual property effectively through various initiatives. This also includes the promotion of converting the latest research results into norms and standards as well as participation in standardization committees at national and international levels.
