Loki Schmidt greenhouses: closure and planned renovation measures!

The Loki Schmidt greenhouses in the Botanical Garden of the University of Rostock are temporarily closed to public visitors. This decision was announced on September 11, 2025 and is based on the need to implement comprehensive security measures. University employees continue to have access to ensure the care of the plants under special safety precautions. An action plan has already been drawn up to secure the greenhouses for future use.

The planned measures include external shading, roof sealing and the construction of scaffolding, particularly in the tropical and succulent compartments, to carry out ceiling work. In addition, modern LED technology will be retrofitted and circulating air fans will be installed. The work is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025 and will be completed by spring 2027. There will be no courses in the greenhouses in the coming semesters due to ongoing safety requirements and the need to adhere to research guidelines. A complete renovation of the greenhouses is currently not planned because a lack of financial resources prevents the necessary measures.

Events in the Loki Schmidt Garden in Hamburg

A lecture at the orchid exhibition on September 20th will address the loss of tropical rainforests and the loss of species, particularly orchids. There will also be a Sunday tour about “scents in the plant kingdom” on September 21st and a workshop on table and commercial pears in northern Germany on September 26th. Finally, the “North German Apple Days 2025” event will take place on September 27th and 28th, 2025, which will offer a varied program of lectures, workshops and a mobile juicer.

Importance of botanical gardens for education and research

Botanical gardens, such as the one in Rostock and the Botanical Garden in Berlin, play an important role in education and research. The Berlin Botanical Garden, which extends to the south of the city, offers an area of 43 hectares with around 20,000 plant species and almost four million dried herbarium specimens. It also houses a DNA bank and a seed bank for wild plants, which are essential for research and the protection of biological diversity.

The Botany School in Berlin, a cooperation with the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family, supports schools in the areas of botany, environmental education and sustainable development. Through further training for teachers and the development of teaching materials, the botanical garden promotes an interface between science and society. The Botanical Museum is currently being redesigned, with a reopening in 2023, to offer visitors an even greater perspective on botanical diversity.
