New master's degree program in Rostock: Focus on sustainability at sea!
From the winter semester of 2025/2026, a new master's degree program will be launched at the University of Rostock called Sustainable Maritime Engineering (SME) offered. This unique course of study is unparalleled in Germany and focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the oceans.
The application deadline for international students ends on May 31, 2025, and the application must be made via the uni-assist platform. For German students with a suitable bachelor's degree, the deadline for direct applications to the University of Rostock begins on June 1, 2025.
Study content and curriculum
The course covers the first three semesters, in which students can acquire a total of 90 ECTS points through a combination of compulsory and elective modules. In the fourth semester, the focus is on the master's thesis, which is worth 30 ECTS points. This can be created in collaboration with industry or research partners. The degree program also includes integrated language courses in German and English, which promotes students' academic flexibility.
Particularly noteworthy is the opportunity to spend a semester abroad. During the course content, students can choose between various elective courses to deepen their knowledge in areas such as naval architecture, ocean engineering or underwater technologies. Support and advice is available to students if required.

The curriculum was developed in close collaboration with the maritime industry, which increases its practical relevance and relevance to the world of work. Professor Florian Sprenger, who leads the course, emphasizes the high global demand for graduates who can make a decisive contribution to future-oriented technologies.
Henrik Langosch, a research assistant, highlights the advantages of Rostock as a place to study, in particular its proximity to the Baltic Sea and the region's growing maritime economy.
Entry requirements
The entry requirements for the master's program in Sustainable Maritime Engineering include a bachelor's degree in engineering with at least 180 ECTS points or a similar degree. Proof of English language skills at level B2 is also required. Certain specialist knowledge, particularly in mathematics, technical mechanics and fluid mechanics/hydrodynamics, is also necessary.
A maximum number of 12 ECTS points can be earned in the first year. Admission to the course requires that successful completion of the master's degree can be expected. This includes completing your first course of study with at least 65% CGPA or a comparable grade. Alternatively, a GATE score of at least 500 points will be accepted.
