New momentum for the University of Rostock: Prorectors re-elected!

On June 25, 2025, the Council of University of Rostock the vice-rectors were confirmed for a second term of office. Professor Nicole Wrage-Mönnig will continue to work as Vice Rector for Research, Talent Development and Equal Opportunities. Dr. Sybille Bachmann remains Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Transfer and Communication Culture, while Professor Karsten Wolf can continue in his role as Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching.

In a positive statement about the re-election, Rector Prof. Elizabeth Prommer emphasized the trust in the work of the university's leading figures. The new term begins on October 14, 2025 and ends on April 13, 2028.

Research fund and career support

Parallel to the personnel changes, the first round of tenders for the University of Rostock's research fund was successfully completed. This fund was created to specifically support scientists in applying for third-party funding and to support promising projects in the early application phase. A total of four projects will be funded in two funding lines, which could significantly strengthen the dynamics of the research landscape at the university.

The research fund is divided into two funding lines. The first, “Talent Development”, is aimed at scientists in early career phases who are preparing an initial application to the DFG or ERC. The second line, “collaborative research”, supports the development of collaborative applications for national or European projects. Professor Nicole Wrage-Mönnig thanked the project managers involved and congratulated them on their approved projects. The next round of calls closes on October 1, 2025 and offers a valuable opportunity for aspiring researchers.

Interdisciplinary research funding

Another element of research funding at the University of Rostock is the “Knowledge – Culture – Transformation” (WKT) department. This department offers targeted support for interdisciplinary research projects, working groups and conferences. Priority funding will be given to projects in the WKT research areas, including “Digital Hermeneutics”, “Societies in Coastal Areas” and “Rituals and Identities”.

The guidelines for WKT research funding were last updated on November 25, 2024. Funding applications must include a description of the interdisciplinary project, the partners involved, and planned and approved third-party funding. Applicants should note that only one application is possible per year and must be submitted by December 15th.

In order to receive funding, users are also required to provide proof of the use of the funds and to include the department's name in all publications.

The University of Rostock's commitment to research funding, both through personnel continuity at the top and through targeted allocation of funds, shows a strong commitment to promoting talent and interdisciplinary projects.
