Re-opening of the Senior Academy in Rostock: Education without borders!
The Senior Academy at the University of Rostock will resume operations in the winter semester 2025/2026 and offers a diverse range of events for older adults. The course start date is October 13, 2025, while registration is now possible. In the lectures, which take place on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Audimax, Ulmenstraße 69, the lecturers use current topics such as contemporary witness work, living wills and the heat waves of the Baltic Sea. This diversity of topics appeals to a broad audience and reframes learning as a lifelong process.
The Senior Academy is open to participants of all ages and without any university degree. This is also reflected in the nine different seminars, which offer several dates on topics such as plant diversity, law and political change. The events aim to impart knowledge and promote social contacts. Practical courses on smartphone use, memory training and English language courses round off the offering. The newly published program booklet is available at the Parkstrasse 6 office and in the Thalia bookstore in the KTC.
Commitment and sponsorships
Another important element of the Senior Academy is the search for sponsors who would like to support international students. This voluntary activity promotes exchange and enables participants to actively participate in university life. The support through sponsorships is not only enriching for the students, but also offers the seniors themselves a valuable opportunity for networking and intercultural exchange.
The academy is supported by the Academic Association of Seniors in Germany (AVDS). This advocates for uniform and open senior studies at German universities. On the website Senior Studies.de Anyone interested can find comprehensive information about types of study, subjects and registration options. This also includes guest auditor studies and opportunities for further academic education for older adults.
Digitalization and further training
In recent years, digitalization has also had a significant impact on educational offerings for seniors. Before the corona pandemic, online events were still few and far between, but the offering in this area has now expanded significantly. The Federal Working Group on Scientific Continuing Education for Older People (BAG WiWA) plays a central role here by bringing together institutions that are responsible for continuing scientific education for older adults. This shows that education in old age is not just a theoretical event, but can also be designed in a practical and real-life way.
The results and projects that arise within the framework of the Senior Academy and similar institutions will not only contribute to a better understanding of social issues, but also enrich the lives of the participants. Understandably, the offers are subject to a fee, but the variety offered and the quality of the events definitely justify the costs.
