PostDocs in focus: Invitation to recognition and networking in Rostock!
From September 15th to 19th, 2025, PAW Germany invites you to the PostDoc Appreciation Week. This event aims to recognize the valuable work of postdocs in research. The University of Rostock is actively involved in this initiative and offers two interactive online workshops that focus on valuing postdoctoral research. These workshops are specifically tailored to provide participants with a better understanding of the challenges and contributions of postdocs. Anne Kluge from the University of Rostock coordinates the events and is available to provide further information.
The majority of the offerings during the PostDoc Appreciation Week will be conducted online, which is intended to appeal to a broad range of participants at all German research institutions. This measure is a clear step towards greater recognition and support for postdoctoral researchers, who often find themselves in an insecure position within the academic hierarchy.
The change in research evaluation
At the same time, there is a cultural change in research evaluation that could be beneficial for postdoctoral researchers. Traditional assessment methods that focus heavily on publication numbers and impact factors do not always capture the quality and integrity of research. These metrics are particularly relevant for postdocs because their career prospects depend heavily on such assessments.
In a system that often prioritizes the prestige of quantitative achievements over qualitative results, postdoctoral researchers find themselves caught in a conflict between research success and career advancement. The psychological and professional stress resulting from this tension poses a serious threat to the integrity of the academic system.
Networking opportunities and support for postdocs
The Postdoc Network Brandenburg (PNB), which includes Viadrina, is active in meeting these challenges. This network promotes the networking and further training of postdoctoral researchers at Brandenburg universities. The position of postdocs is intended to be strengthened through regular calls for fellowships and further qualification opportunities.
In addition, the Viadrina PhD/Postdoc Network was founded to specifically promote collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange among doctoral students and postdocs. Such initiatives are crucial to support postdocs and improve their career prospects. Interested and committed scientists are cordially invited to join these networks.
