Rostock celebrates 100 years of quantum research with art and science!

In 2025, the University of Rostock will celebrate the 100th anniversary of quantum research. A central part of these celebrations is the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. To properly recognize this, the university is organizing an extensive series of events that shed light on diverse aspects of quantum physics. On April 14th, the “Quantum Physics Art” exhibition series will open as part of World Quantum Day, symbolizing the fusion of art and science.

The opening ceremony will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the University Church of Rostock, led by Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger. This event not only marks a celebratory start, but is also the beginning of a series of exhibitions spread across several locations. In addition to the University Church, the Botanical Garden at 7:00 p.m. and the Institute of Physics at 8:15 p.m. will also be the venues for the artistic presentations. RSAG shuttle buses will run between the different locations, making transfers easier for visitors.

Artistic expression of quantum physics

Four artists – Juliane Laitzsch, Tino Bittner, Lars Heidemann and Marc W1353L – deal with various aspects of quantum physics in their works. The art forms on display range from drawings on measurement and conceptual art on symmetry to photographs that address the uncertainty principle and installations on polarization. The conceptual development of the exhibition is strongly influenced by the Rostock Art Association and the University of Music and Theater, which illustrates the close connection between science and art.

The exhibitions are open to the public until May 16, 2025, enabling interested parties and media representatives to get an overview of the creative approaches to quantum research. The University of Rostock aims to spread knowledge and fascination for quantum physics and to promote a dialogue between science and art.

Accompanying events to the International Year of Quantum

However, the celebrations are not limited to April 14th. The 22nd Physics Day took place on March 4th on the university's Südstadt campus, with the theme “The Elequant in Space 2.0” aimed at innovative developments in quantum physics. Scientists and students presented their current research, and an experimentarium invited students from 23 schools to experience the fascination of the quantum world up close.

Other highlights of the year include the International Day of Light on May 16th, which will be enriched by the film “Tracing Light – The Magic of Light” and a subsequent discussion. The Long Night of Science on May 15th and the Science@Sail event in August in the Rostock city harbor also offer numerous opportunities to find out more about the limitless possibilities of quantum research.

The celebratory framework and the events surrounding quantum research provide new impetus for an interdisciplinary discussion of topics of modern science. The commitment of the University of Rostock, in collaboration with various cultural and scientific institutions, makes clear how important it is to overcome the boundaries between disciplines and to inspire a wider audience for such complex topics. Further information is available on the websites of the University of Rostock and the Rostock Art Association, where the comprehensive programs and exhibitions are presented in detail.
