Rostock celebrates 100 years of quantum physics – experience science to amaze!

In 2025, the world will witness a special anniversary: 100 years of quantum mechanics. To mark this important event, the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), declared by the UN, takes place. From January to December 2025, initiatives will be implemented worldwide to celebrate the significant contributions of quantum science and its practical applications. [Wikipedia] reports that the initiative has been in the works since April 2018, during a meeting of the American Physical Society.

In Germany, the University of Rostock and the Hanseatic City of Rostock play a leading role in initiating celebrations. The university's Institute of Physics has launched a series of events to properly celebrate the anniversary. The celebrations on the occasion of the 22nd Physics Day began on March 4, 2025 with the theme “The Elequant in Space 2.0” on the Südstadt campus.

A variety of events in Rostock

The opening event featured presentations by scientists and students in physics and chemistry. Pupils from 23 schools were invited to marvel, learn and actively participate. An experimental room was opened to the public from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Media representatives were able to register for the Physics Day in order to follow the various program items.

Another highlight will be World Quantum Day on April 14th, which includes three exhibitions in Rostock. Artists and physicists appear in dialogue, and speaking and percussion performances are offered in cooperation with the University of Music and Theater. The mayor Eva-Maria Kröger takes over the patronage of the events.

Some of the big events are the International Day of Light on May 16th with the film screening “Tracing Light – The Magic of Light” and the Long Night of Science on May 15th, which features lectures and experiments on quantum physics from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Science@Sail event will also take place in the Rostock city harbor from August 7th to 10th.

Long-term perspectives and upcoming events

A children's university with physics professor Alexander Szameit is planned for December 10, 2025; his lecture is entitled “Ernie and Bert trapped in the laboratory”. Another event is the exhibition “quantum”, which addresses artistic positions on the International Year of Quantum Physics. This will open on December 10, 2025 and run until January 18, 2026. As part of the IYQ, the German Physical Society also coordinates generally understandable lectures and further training for teachers.

Formed together, these events help raise public awareness of quantum science and its applications. Technologies that shape our everyday lives, from smartphones to barcode scanners to magnetic resonance imaging, are based on the principles of quantum mechanics, which originated in 1925. [World of Physics] highlights that a total of 57 countries are taking part in the “Quantum Year”, thus creating a global celebration.
