Reading day in Rostock: Children immerse themselves in exciting adventures!
The 4th reading day of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Rostock took place on June 20, 2025 and was organized under the motto “Friendship”. Students, employees and professors from the university read children's literature to primary school children from the Margaretenplatz primary school (KTV) and the Kleine Birke primary school (Lütten Klein). The children immersed themselves in well-known works such as “Tomorrow I Decide” by Jörg Mühle and “The Day I Became Cool” by Juma Kliebenstein and were invited to discuss what they had heard.
The aim of this reading campaign was to awaken the students' enthusiasm for reading and at the same time to create transfer networks in Rostock schools. The collaboration between the university and the schools began in the winter semester of 2023/2024 and has continued to develop since then. The additional program for first and second graders at the Margaretenplatz elementary school was particularly exciting: Here, the first graders took part in a paper airplane competition and made Soma cubes, while the second graders discovered exciting archaeological finds at a junior excavation site.
Educational activities and support
A sports course organized by the University of Rostock University Sports was offered at the Kleine Birke primary school. The reading day, supported by Hugendubel Rostock, aims to promote reading skills, which are a crucial key skill for success in all school subjects. According to that Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) it is very important that children come to school with different language skills. A good foundation in reading skills not only makes access to knowledge easier, but also enables children to actively participate in their living environment.
One focus of the BMBF is on improving reading skills in Germany through various projects. For example, the “Lesestart 1-2-3” project gives children and young people early access to the world of books, regardless of their social background. Important measures include support from over 6,500 pediatricians and 5,600 libraries, which have provided a total of 5 million reading start sets.
The importance of promoting reading
In addition, the BMBF offers special programs for refugee children to make it easier for them to access the German language and thus to society. Projects like “MENTOR Campus” focus on individual support for children with reading difficulties. Mentors work directly to improve reading skills and offer flexible formats for reading lessons.
In summary, reading day is not only an entertaining event, but also an important measure to strengthen children's reading skills. The close cooperation between educational institutions in Rostock and the commitment of initiatives such as the BMBF are crucial in providing children with optimal learning conditions and accompanying them on their educational path.
