Braunschweig innovation offensive: 50 million for new pharmacy building!
On July 11, 2025, the Technical University of Braunschweig will provide information about significant developments at the university and in the region in its weekly overview. To start the week, a meeting of the University Council of the TU Braunschweig took place on July 1st in the Open Hybrid LabFactory (OHLF) in Wolfsburg. An important statement on the strategic direction of the university was adopted here.
Another important step for the TU Braunschweig was taken with the laying of the foundation stone for the new pharmacy building. This will be financed with around 50 million euros and promises modern teaching and research spaces. TU President Angela Ittel, Science Minister Falko Mohrs and Mayor Thorsten Kornblum took part in the ceremony, who sank a time capsule together.
Scientific breakthroughs
In the area of research, the DEEP-DV research group, led by Prof. Melanie Brinkmann from the TU Braunschweig and Prof. Nicole Fischer from the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, received funding of 5.3 million euros from the DFG. These funds are earmarked for research into DNA viruses over the next four years.
A further focus on research and innovation is the GOe FUTURE initiative. This project to promote a life science startup ecosystem was selected as part of the nationwide lighthouse competition. The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) is one of the main players and will work together with several regional partners on the implementation with funding of up to 20 million euros. This is also confirmed by the confirmation of Federal Minister of Economics Dr. Robert Habeck supported during the 25th anniversary of the EXIST program. The aim is to promote sustainable spin-offs in the life science sector.
New developments in the university landscape
Bernt Erlewein was elected full-time vice president of the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts on July 9th. This change complements the reforms already initiated in the region's higher education landscape. In addition, Prof. Richmond Sarpong from the University of California, Berkeley, was awarded the 2025 Inhoffen Medal for his outstanding achievements in synthetic chemistry.
Other innovative projects at TU Braunschweig include a new open access journal on language research, published by Prof. Katharina Kellermann, and a project entitled “KAUF-AUS”, which shows 13 master's theses on the reuse of a former department store building. These works will be presented in an accompanying exhibition.
Looking into the future
The inaugural lecture by Prof. Christian Dietrich, which deals with system software and hardware evolution, will also take place next week at the TU Braunschweig on July 16th. The Young Software Developers Day is planned for July 17th, where around 190 students will present their results from the software development internship.
The activities are rounded off by regular events and events, such as the participation of alumni*ae and students on Radio Okerwelle, which will be broadcast on July 16th and 17th. A photo promotion for the DFG calendar 2026 and the “Profs@Turntables” event in November, which collects money for charitable projects, illustrate the university's commitment to science and community.
