Citizens participate in research: Exciting Citizen Science Day at the LUH!

On May 15, 2025, Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) will host the Citizen Science Day, which will take place in the atrium of the main building, Welfengarten 1. The aim of the event is to actively involve citizens in research projects. The event will be in collaboration with the citizen science platform mit:research! carried out from Berlin and funded by the Zukunft.Niedersachsen program of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. Admission is free, but registration is recommended.

Visitors can look forward to a marketplace that is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and presents around 15 LUH projects. A varied program invites you to discover the diversity and relevance of citizen science. From 10 a.m. there will be three specific sessions aimed at different target groups: citizens, teachers and researchers at the university. Here participants can learn how to take part in citizen science projects or implement them in schools. There are also insights into how researchers can integrate citizen science into their research proposals.

Diverse opportunities for participation

In addition to the marketplace presentation, a presentation of the citizen science projects with a small snack will be offered at 12 p.m. A highlight of the event is the guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Stefan Böschen from RWTH Aachen, which will take place at 2 p.m. The day ends at 4 p.m. with a convivial end on the market square.

In the context of the lecture series at the LUH, the possibilities of citizen research for science and society will be discussed. This lecture presents numerous projects on citizen participation and aims to promote exchange between citizens, researchers and students. One example is the “Vision:EN 2040PLUS” project, which deals with the energy transition and climate protection goals. A digital dialogue tool is being developed here to involve citizens and decision-makers in shaping a sustainable energy future.

The importance of citizen science for society

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) emphasizes the importance of participation in research and research policy. Citizens and civil society groups should actively participate in the design of research processes. In this context, the Ideas Run took place in the 2022 Science Year, during which citizens formulated over 14,000 questions for research. This shows a growing interest in active participation in scientific issues.

The measures supported by the BMBF to improve participation are diverse. These include, among other things, guidelines and handouts that are intended to make it easier to carry out citizen science projects. Practical examples such as communication guidelines and specific recommendations for student participation are also offered. These developments demonstrate the innovation value and social benefits that can be achieved through citizen participation in research.
