Honor for Dr. Michael Degner: A life for the TU Clausthal!

On March 28, 2025, the ceremonial presentation of certificates for Dr. Michael Degner, who was appointed honorary professor. The event began with a warm welcome from the university president, Dr.-Ing. Sylvia Schattauer, who welcomed several other prominent guests, including professors Johannes Buhl and Karl-Heinz Spitzer, as well as seven Degner family members.

Dr. Degner, who earned his diploma in physics at the Ruhr University Bochum in 1989, received his doctorate in 1993 at the Clausthal University of Technology at the Institute for Material Forming. In his speech, he highlighted the support of his wife, who has accompanied him for over 38 years. Schattauer praised the guests' presence and Degner's excellent performance.

Scientific career and contributions

The professional career of Dr. Degner includes positions at renowned companies such as Krupp Hoesch Stahl, Thyssen Krupp Stahl, the Steel Institute VDEh and the SMS group. Since completing his doctorate, he has felt closely connected to Clausthal University of Technology and actively contributes his expertise to teaching. He already worked as a lecturer in the winter semester of 2010/11 and in the summer semester of 2016 and has been regularly supporting teaching at the TU since 2020.

A special thank you went to Professor Heinz Palkowski, who played a key role in integrating Degner's lectures into the curriculum. Professor Spitzer also appeared to be a supporter of Degner's honorary professorship. The celebrations ended with a champagne reception and homemade cakes provided by Degner's daughter and a special gift from Professor Buhl: a calendar book with inspiring impulses.

Innovations and future visions

Dr. Degner plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into his lectures to further optimize teaching methods. He also sees it as a central task to promote progress in teaching and research.

The Institute of Metallurgy, where Dr. Degner will teach, was founded in 1999 and emerged from the merger of several institutes. It deals with a variety of metallurgical issues, from ore extraction to surface processing. The main research areas include the production and shaping of metallic and hybrid semi-finished products, including the development and characterization of materials.

Current research topics at this institute include the bake-hardening behavior of hot-rolled multiphase steels and the development of bainitic steels. Another focus is on studying the effects of foreign substances on the properties of sheet metal materials and the processing of sandwich materials, which are important for applications in both the automotive industry and the biomedical field, as reported by imet.tu-clausthal.de.

The institute's wide range of courses is aimed at students of metallurgy, mechanical engineering and materials technology, with close cooperation with industry, which includes both further training measures and research services.

With the appointment of Dr. Michael Degner's appointment as honorary professor opens up a new era in teaching and research at Clausthal University of Technology, which is characterized by innovation and practical orientation.
