Erasmus in Budapest: Discover a city full of adventure and opportunities!
Budapest, the vibrant capital of Hungary, attracts not only tourists but also numerous international students who want to enrich their academic careers through the Erasmus+ exchange program. A student who is studying industrial engineering with a major in civil engineering at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is currently studying in this lively city for five months. According to the information from TU Braunschweig She appreciates the new perspectives and cultural experiences that her stay brings with it.
The student lives in a shared apartment project in the seventh district, while her fellow student lives in another district. Both found their accommodation via apartment search platforms, which is now a common way in Budapest. Living in shared apartments is particularly recommended as the costs are lower than in many other European capitals.
Study and everyday life
Studying at the BME brings with it some differences to the German university system. Here, student attendance is taken very seriously, which is reflected in bonus points for regular participation. In addition, two exams are required per course: one in the middle and one at the end of the semester. Students benefit from a more relaxed schedule characterized by fewer credit-bearing courses and enjoy the flexibility this brings.
In her first few weeks, the student took part in various Erasmus Student Network (ESN) events. This includes city tours, Hungarian crash courses and social parties. As part of student life, excursions such as day trips to Vienna and weekends at Lake Balaton are also very popular. In the student's own words: "Budapest is big and offers many leisure opportunities." These impressions are through Erasmus Play which highlights the multicultural facets of the city.
Cost of living and leisure activities
The cost of living in Budapest is according to the Maverick Lodges Similar to Germany, but cheaper overall than in Western Europe. A monthly public transport ticket costs around 3,980 HUF (approximately 10 euros), making mobility within the city extremely cost-effective. The average cost of living is between 199,000 and 278,600 HUF (approx. 500 to 700 euros), including accommodation, food and leisure.
In addition to academic obligations, numerous cultural events and a lively nightlife invite you to enjoy Budapest to the fullest. Popular leisure activities include visits to the thermal baths, picnics on Margaret Island and boat trips on the Danube. The city is divided into two areas: Buda, the quiet residential area, and Pest, the lively nightlife district.
One of the student's culinary insider tips is to try langos and discover vegan alternatives to Hungarian classics. A special experience is the Prosecco boat tour on the Danube at sunset, which offers an impressive view of the city.
Given the positive experiences and the many new friends she was able to make, the student encourages future students to be brave and minimize their concerns in advance. Support from the international community is crucial.
