First class in food engineering: graduates celebrate success!
On April 11, 2025, the first seven graduates of the international master's program “Food Process and Product Engineering” successfully completed their studies. The course was launched in 2022 as a cooperation between the Hannover Veterinary University Foundation (TiHo) and the DIL German Institute for Food Technology e. V. brought into being. The aim is to train specialists for sustainable and safe food production. The course focuses on combining science and practice to prepare students for the current challenges in the food industry.
This first year included students from seven different nations: India, South Africa, Nepal, Eritrea, Germany, Türkiye and Iran. Professor Dr. Klaus Osterrieder, President of TiHo, presented the graduates with their certificates and recognized their achievements. Professor Dr. Madeleine Plötz highlighted the pioneering role of the first graduates and emphasized their intensive engagement with food technology, natural sciences and process economics.
Social significance and innovation
Dr. Volker Heinz, director of the DIL e. V., emphasized the social significance of the course, especially the ability of graduates to design innovative processes and solutions. The master's degree program provides knowledge in the development and quality assurance of new food products as well as in modern processing technologies and sustainable production methods. Students also have the opportunity to complete practical phases in companies on the Artland Campus Quakenbrück and write their master's thesis there.
The international focus of the course is also reflected in the teaching in English and is aimed at students with a bachelor's degree in various relevant disciplines. This interdisciplinary training prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities in the food industry. The food industry is one of the largest and most stable industries in the world and offers a wide range of opportunities, from research and development of new products to quality management and production planning.
Career prospects in the food industry
With the constant demand for new and innovative foods as well as the growing importance of food safety, the industry offers an attractive prospect for graduates. The food industry is not only stable, but also future-proof. There are many opportunities here, including a high level of job security, even in uncertain economic times. Graduates can work in a variety of areas including:
- Lebensmittelproduzenten
- Rohstofflieferanten
- Analytik- und Umweltlabore
- Kosmetik- und Pharmaunternehmen
- Verpackungsmittelindustrie
- Logistik und Handel
- Recycling
- Behörden und Verbände
A bachelor's degree and, if necessary, further training open up promising earning opportunities and career paths for talented specialists. The combination of practical training and theoretical knowledge ensures that graduates are well prepared for the needs of the dynamically developing food industry. Their expertise is crucial for the future development of sustainable production and protecting consumer health, as [Trier University of Applied Sciences] reports.
The “Food Process and Product Engineering” master’s degree program thus makes a valuable contribution to sustainable development in the food industry by promoting innovative solutions and value-adding techniques, according to [Foodjobs.de].
