First semesters get off to a flying start: MHH welcomes over 600 new medical students!
The Hannover Medical School (MHH) recently welcomed more than 600 first-year students in ten different study programs. This took place as part of a ceremonial opening at which the new master's degree program in clinical psychology and psychotherapy was introduced, which offers space for 20 students. The largest group of first-semester students is the model course HannibaL (human medicine) with 320 new students, including 18 who were accepted through the special rural doctor quota in order to combat the rural doctor shortage. In addition, 80 students are starting the dentistry course and 35 are starting the midwifery course. The master's programs in biochemistry, biomedicine, biomedical data science and public health attract a total of 109 students, while 70 young researchers are enrolled in the doctoral program at the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS). MHH reports.
As part of the welcome, the MHH President Prof. Dr. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner wished all first-year students a good start and emphasized the importance of the contact network among students. The Dean of Studies for Human Medicine, Prof. Dr. Christian Mühlfeld, emphasized that patient contact is made possible in the first week, which makes it easier to get started with later practical work. He received support from Dr. Alexandros Rahn from the children's clinic, who encouraged the students to learn together and support each other.
Freshers week with a diverse program
The General Student Committee (AStA) has organized a “firsts week” for new students, which offers important orientation. Various events are planned in the action program that offer the opportunity to make contacts and find your way around the new environment. This includes a pub evening on Sunday, an official welcome on Monday and an MHH rally on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening, students can expect a reception from the student union with free champagne and lasagne. The Eilenriede rally in the city forest and a city tour are also part of the program, which ends with an MHH party on Thursday evening MHH-AStA detailed.
The first-semester folders that are given to new students contain important information such as access data to programs, the matriculation card and a digital key card. Guided tours of the MHH campus buildings are intended to help you familiarize yourself with the surrounding area.
Important tips for starting your studies
Studying medicine is a significant challenge, which is why the exchange between fellow students and the use of the university's offerings are of great importance. So reported DocCheck about common questions at the start of your studies, such as which textbooks are suitable for preparing for exams and whether attendance at every lecture is necessary. In addition to conveying important content, attention is also paid to social exchange, which is promoted by the numerous events during the freshers' week.
For further support, all new medical students receive a stethoscope as a welcome gift. The Human Medicine Department also offers to provide gowns for fitting, which are used in the preparation room. This year, a size chart is sufficient and fittings are no longer necessary.
