Ceremonial graduation: TU Clausthal impresses with new graduates!
On April 16, 2025, the Clausthal University of Technology said goodbye to a significant number of graduates in a celebratory ceremony in the dome hall of the Aula Academica. University President Dr.-Ing. Sylvia Schattauer congratulated the newly graduated academics on their achievements. The event included the awarding of 56 bachelor's and 95 master's degrees as well as 33 doctorates and four habilitations in the winter semester 2024/2025. Particular attention was paid to the outstanding achievements in the field of electrical power engineering, where Mohammad Ayayda and Abhishek Verma were awarded the Erwin Marx Prize 2024 for the best master's thesis.
With sensitive words, Mayor Thomas Gundermann stood up for the city of Clausthal-Zellerfeld and expressed his hope that he would see the graduates again soon. Cornelia Rebbereh, chairwoman of the Association of Friends of TU Clausthal, encouraged the graduates to celebrate their success properly and become part of the Clausthal alumni network. The ceremony was rounded off with musical performances by the rock, pop and jazz choir “singingTUC”.
Increase in student numbers
In her speech, President Dr.-Ing. Sylvia Schattauer said that Clausthal University of Technology has recorded an increase in first-semester students in the last two semesters. This is happening against the background of a general dilemma: In the Federal Republic of Germany, the engineering profession remains increasingly less in demand, and around 30 percent of study places in technical disciplines remain unfilled. The reasons for this are, among other things, a growing hostility to technology among the population and the fact that subjects such as chemistry and physics, which are important for engineering courses, are often deselected in high schools LinkedIn reports.
The academic ceremony was organized by the Department of Further Education and Event Management at Clausthal University of Technology and was very well received. After the ceremony there was a reception where sparkling wine and beer from the local research brewery were served. The event not only represented a highlight for the graduates, but also provided a platform for discussions about the challenges and prospects in the field of engineering.
Education statistics and shortage of skilled workers
Current developments in the higher education sector make it clear that official higher education statistics provide important data for the planning and political shaping of higher education. In other disciplines, lecture halls are often overcrowded, while engineering is faced with an oversupply of study places. This gap is likely to endanger the technological competitiveness of the German economy educational server.
In order to adequately train future engineers and get them excited about the industry, comprehensive reforms in school education are necessary. This is the only way to ensure that graduates are not only well trained, but can also meet the requirements of the industry.
