Celebratory anniversary: 25 years of Stud.IP – an eye on the future of university teaching!

On September 18, 2025, the learning and campus management system “Stud.IP” will celebrate its 25th anniversary, which has played an important role in the educational landscape since its creation by Göttingen students and Data-Quest. During this time, Stud.IP has established itself as a powerful open source system that was quickly adopted and further developed by many universities. To mark this anniversary, a two-day conference will take place in Göttingen, organized by “Stud.IP e.V.”, the University of Göttingen and Data-Quest.

The event, which will take place on September 17th and 18th, 2025 in the historical building of the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen, begins with keynote lectures on both days. On September 18th, Prof. Dr. Joachim Schachtner, State Secretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, will give a welcoming speech. The participants will be presented with central topics that include the history of Stud.IP, its use in municipal and state services, for example in the state office for fire and disaster control, as well as its use in international collaborative projects.

Innovations and further developments from Stud.IP

The latest version, Stud.IP 6, represents a significant advance that was realized during a development period of 18 months. This version includes comprehensive user interface revisions that significantly improve usability for users. Newly introduced communication filters enable the creation of form letters for defined target groups, while the study groups are now designed to be more user-friendly.

Also technically crucial is the modernization of the code, which is important for both security and future expansions. This version offers new interfaces, including a JSON API and integration with ILIAS 9, which improves interoperability with other systems. Those interested can find further information about these developments on the information page and in the detailed release notes demo.studip.de.

OER and its relevance in higher education

A current issue in higher education is the availability of Open Educational Resources (OER). These free educational resources include teaching and learning materials that are publicly available and can contribute to improving the quality of education. A comprehensive resource, OERinfo, provides materials and support for universities to promote access to these resources.

There is a growing trend towards integrating OER, particularly in higher education, supported by initiatives such as the “OER inForm” project, which develops consulting concepts for media centers at universities. Wide use of open source learning management systems such as Stud.IP is also noted, showing that many German universities want to take advantage of the benefits of OER. As part of these efforts, an OER strategy was published by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which describes challenges and goals in the area of open educational resources.

The conference on the 25th anniversary of Stud.IP offers an excellent opportunity for operators and users to exchange ideas about the latest developments and the future use of Stud.IP in connection with OER. Registrations are open until September 11, 2025, and further information is available on the Stud.IP conference website available.
