Geo4Göttingen 2025: Experience the fascination of geosciences!

The geoscientific conference “Geo4Göttingen” will take place at the University of Göttingen from September 14th to 18th, 2025. Organized by the University of Göttingen in collaboration with well-known institutions such as German Geological Society (DGGV), the German Society for Geomorphology (DGGM) and the German Mineralogical Society (DMG), the event focuses on pressing issues such as climate change, the sustainable use of resources and changes to the earth. The conference's motto is “Geo4Change – Earth, Life, Climate, Resources, Materials” and aims to discuss interdisciplinary solutions to the challenges in geosciences.

The program includes presentations of research results as well as discussion formats that bring together experts from different disciplines. At the same time, a public supporting program is offered that is accessible to various target groups.

Public supporting program

A highlight of the supporting program is the GeoExperience Day on September 14, 2025 in the Geoscience Center at the University of Göttingen. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., families, children aged two and over and adults can take part in hands-on activities, experiments and short lectures. Thematically it's about the formation of the planet, volcanoes and geoparks. Entry is free, making the day a valuable opportunity for the public.

On September 15th, the play “The Beginning and End of the Anthropocene” will be performed in the German Theater. From 7:45 p.m., the focus will be on topics such as climate change, nuclear energy and the future of energy resources. An innovative speed dating format will then take place between the audience and the ensemble to promote dialogue about these important topics.

The event will continue with a panel discussion on September 16, 2025 in the auditorium at Wilhelmsplatz. From 7:30 p.m., experts from science, authorities and the media will discuss “Green growth – the economy of the future or an illusion?” about resources, recycling and the future of the economic system. Viewers have the opportunity to actively participate in a question-and-answer session and contribute their thoughts.

  • GeoErlebnistag: 14. September, 11-16 Uhr, Geowissenschaftliches Zentrum, Eintritt frei.
  • Theaterstück „Anfang und Ende des Anthropozäns“: 15. September, 19:45 Uhr, Deutsches Theater.
  • Podiumsdiskussion: 16. September, 19:30 Uhr, Aula am Wilhelmsplatz, mit Frage-Antwort-Runde.

Fossil workshop and other events

A fossil workshop entitled “Mystery Fossils” will also be offered on September 19, 2025. This is aimed at hobby and professional paleontologists and takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Geosciences Center. Registration is required by September 1, 2025.

The conference is particularly designed for experts from the geosciences. But the University of Göttingen also aims to involve a broader audience in discussions about sustainable developments and solutions through participatory and dialogue-oriented science communication. Initiatives such as the new professorship for “Science Communication and Climate Education”, which was launched in April 2023 as part of the BMBF’s WISNA Tenure Track Program, underline the importance of research communication in today’s world.
