Göttingen celebrates 100 years of quantum mechanics – graduates shine!

On July 4, 2025, the Faculty of Physics celebrates University of Göttingen the traditional “Dies Physicus”. The event will take place in Lecture Hall 2, Friedrich-Hund-Platz 1, and starts at 1:30 p.m. Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Martin Wenderoth will warmly welcome the graduates.

This year, 46 graduates can look forward to a special occasion. The ceremony not only recognizes their achievements, but also awards awards to outstanding lecturers who made a significant contribution to the training during their time as students. The student council will also contribute to the celebration with a speech.

Lecture and awards

A highlight of the event will be the keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Stefan Kehrein, who will deal with the topic “100 years of quantum mechanics – a scientific revolution made in Göttingen”. Several awards will also be presented during “Dies Physicus”. The Robert Wichard Pohl Medal for the best basic lecture goes to Prof. Dr. Stefan Klumpp for “Theory I: Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics”. The award for the best special lecture goes to Prof. Dr. Stanley Lai for “Particle Physics 3 – Physics of and with leptons”. In addition, the best tutors, Jannis Fischer and Michele Denis Kellermann, will be honored for their outstanding achievements.

These people were selected with the help of course evaluations carried out by the study committee. In addition, the Born Franck Prize, which is endowed with 4,000 euros, will go to Dr. Till Domröse for his dissertation “Operando and Ultrafast Electron Microscopy of Structural Phase Transformations”, which was presented by Prof. Dr. Claus Ropers was looked after. Several prizes are awarded to master's graduates, including the Dr. Berliner-Dr. Ungewitter Foundation, which is awarded to Dorian Didier Feisel, Luk Anton Fleddermann, Enno Müller, Theresa Reisch, Lars Torbjørn Stutzer, Torben Sunkel, Roman David Ventzke and Daniel Werner.

Current developments in research

In the meantime, the Faculty of Physics recently advertised two professorships: a W2-t.t. and a W3 professorship. The research focus of these positions includes, among other things, thermodynamics, structure-property relationships in materials physics and new materials. This could also have an impact on future teaching and research at the faculty, especially with regard to introductory courses.

In addition, the Max Born Seminar Series program will take place in 2025, which follows on from the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Particular attention is paid to the results from the 1920s, with contributions from renowned scientists. Invited experts will speak about current topics in quantum physics and related fields.

Another interesting event will be the Quantum Science & Networking Event, which will take place on May 5th and 6th. In this context, scientific lectures on current research topics are presented and space is created for exchange between young scientists and external colleagues.
