Innovative research project in Osnabrück: Discover nanodiamonds and cell biology!

On August 23 and 24, 2025, Federal Science Minister Dorothee Bär visited the interdisciplinary research project at the University of Osnabrück. The initiative, which is closely linked to the research building for cellular nanoanalytics (CellNanOs) on the Westerberg campus, shows remarkable collaboration in the areas of physics, chemistry and biology. These interdisciplinary research collaborations aim to explore cellular biology in novel ways.

As part of this visit, the digitization and virtual experience of laboratories was demonstrated. These included laser, synthesis and cell preparation laboratories, allowing scientists to synthesize nanodiamonds and perform cellular imaging using a quantum microscope. Prof. Dr. Mirco Imlau leads the interdisciplinary research project quantumexpedition, which is being funded with a total volume of 1.26 million euros until the end of 2026 in order to further advance scientific progress in these areas.

Interdisciplinary approaches in cell biology

The research activities of the University of Osnabrück focus not only on the fundamentals of cellular life development, but also on the control of molecular processes. One focus is on microbial cell biology, which is supported by a variety of methods such as molecular biology, biochemistry and bioanalytics. Quantitative microscopy is particularly important, especially single-molecule microscopy, which makes it possible to directly observe the interactions and functions of individual molecular players in the cellular environment.

In addition, the cell biology of microorganisms from all domains of life is studied, including archaea, eukaryotes and prokaryotes. These diverse approaches, led by interdisciplinary groups, offer valuable insights into the complexity of molecular life and the interplay of various biological processes.

Technological support measures

Since 2020, numerous measures have been implemented to support research work. The supported projects include the Active Place Avoidance System, various microscope upgrades and the development of methods such as cell hashing.

In addition, modern technologies such as the CrestOptics Spinning Disc and the Formulatrix Rock Imager System were introduced for large-volume series sections. These investments in innovative technologies and training are part of a multi-layered strategy that is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science. The funding is provided as part of the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments in order to secure and further expand scientific excellence in Germany.
