The international student landscape in Germany is showing a remarkable increase. Today, Christmas allows us to look at the numbers and trends in the context of the University of Osnabrück. The current situation is characterized by constant growth, which enriches not only diversity but also academic culture.
A recent analysis of uni-osnabrueck.de shows that international students from Asia make up the largest group in Germany at around 44 percent. At the University of Osnabrück, the number of foreign students increased from 853 in the winter semester 2020/21 to an impressive 1,365 in the winter semester 2024/25. This not only shows a growing interest in German higher education, but also the university's targeted efforts in the area of internationalization.
Countries of origin of international students
According to the HSI Monitor, a data portal on the internationality of German universities, 12.9 percent of international students in Germany came from India, followed by 10.2 percent from China. In the winter semester of 2024/25, the largest group of international students at the University of Osnabrück was from Turkey with 180, followed by India (151) and Iran (107). The analysis also reveals that China only ranks sixth on campus, behind Syria and Egypt.
These figures underline the diversity of the countries of origin and show that the University of Osnabrück has become an attractive destination for students from different parts of the world. Courses that are offered in English, such as the Master's in Economics, Biology or Cognitive Science, are particularly in demand.
Strategic internationalization
The development of international student numbers is supported by both the university management and various institutions. Prof. Dr. Andrea Lenschow, Vice President for International Affairs, emphasizes in her statements the enrichment that international students represent for the university. She emphasizes the important role of the university's internationalization strategy.
Malte Paolo Benjamins, head of the International Office, sees the increase in international students as an opportunity and notes that it is important to create the conditions for attractive international studies. These objectives are underlined by the support of the HSI Monitor, which has been providing a wide range of data on the internationality of German universities since 2008. The monitor is supported by several partners, including DAAD and HRK, and has been introducing individual user access for universities since 2021.
